that was when the US Military Bases were still around (Clark Air Base & Subic Naval Base)
imagine the billion$ of dollar$ pumping into the philippine government from US lease payments every year. not to mention US military families living in the philippines spending their dollar$ into the local economy. and also thousands of filipino civilian workers directly and indirectly benefited from the military bases.
