Silliman University designated as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has designated Silliman University as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education (CoE).
CHED Chairman Dr. Emmanuel Angeles, in his July 2009 letter, wrote that Silliman has been granted the CoE status for three years beginning March 15, 2009.

There are only six CoEs in Nursing Education in the country. Silliman is one of only two in Region 7.

Silliman is also a CoE in Teacher Education and a Center of Development (CoD) in Accountancy and Information Technology Education.
CoEs and CoDs are granted to higher education institutions which have demonstrated the highest degree or level of standards along the areas of instruction, research and extension.

Russ Ligtas and Razceljan Salvarita: A Duet in Performance Art

    July 16, 2010
Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, Silliman University

Two top performance artists from Cebu and Bacolod come together to give Silliman University and Dumaguete a one-of-a-kind spectacle in the artform that the city has yet to see.

RUSS RANIEL LIGTAS is a visual and performance artist who regularly performs with Cebu’s only performance art group XO?. His performances involve dance, costuming, and pop culture elements. He writes poetry and other creative text and is a member of the Cebuano writer’s group Bathalad Inc. He also contributes and produces articles for two local magazines.

RAZCELJAN LUIZ SALVARITA is a member of a family of artists based in Bacolod City, but is now based in Dumaguete City and Bali, Indonesia. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication at Silliman University, where he also later pursued a master’s degree in Environmental Policy. Razcel, perhaps Dumaguete’s fast-rising young visual artist is also a writer, a photographer, a performance artist, an environmental activist. He is best remembered as the person whose body was painted white and then who walked around Dumaguete semi-naked to call attention to his “Save the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes” campaign. He has also founded the collective art group Artantrum.

Performance art has become a mainstay in the world of art in general, but in terms of popular acceptance and visibility, it still has to take its roots in the world of art and culture in Dumaguete City. In that sense, Dumaguete is ripe for a good introduction into the best of local performance art, with Russ Raniel Ligtas of Cebu City and Razceljan Salvarita of Bacolod City and Dumaguete.

But first, a little bit of a definition. Performance art, according to Wikipedia, is “art in which the actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work. It can happen anywhere, at any time, or for any length of time. Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer’s body, and a relationship between performer and audience.

Sillimanian to attend prestigious Beijing Art Biennale

Dumaguete-based visual artist Cristina Taniguchi has been invited to take part in the 4th Beijing International Art Biennale, which will be held in Beijing, China from September 19 to 23, 2010. Taniguchi, a Silliman University alumna, has been invited for her work titled “Wrong Horizon No. 2.” The Biennale, which is working on the theme of “environment concern and human existence,” is a large-scale international art exhibition jointly hosted by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, and the China Artists Association. A symposium will also be held simultaneously during the exhibition, where curatorial committee members, exhibition participants, influential art critics, curators, scholars, and editors from China and other countries will participate. Taniguchi’s work was selected out of many submissions from more than 80 countries. Her participation is in the invitation category. This will be Taniguchi’s third time to participate in the prestigious exhibition. She was also in the 2005 and the 2008 editions of the biennale.
