Aquino Picks Associate Justice Carpio-Morales To Administer Oath Of Office

Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines (AHN) - Philippine President-elect Benigno Aquino III has selected Supreme Court Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales to be the one to administer his oath of office on June 30. That is the inauguration day for the incoming administration set by the Philippine constitution.

Philippine presidents traditionally take their oath of office before the Supreme Court Chief Justice. But because Aquino opposed outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s appointment of Renato Corona as chief justice, he opted for Carpio-Morales. She was the lone dissenting justice in the Supreme Court decision over Arroyo’s authority to name a new chief justice, even if the charter prohibits appointments during an election period.
