What's wrong with being a leftist? There are many leftists before who are business and government leaders now.
The important thing is for a student to learn from each experience as it comes. After all, education is not just confined to the four walls of a classroom; everything that revolves around him/her is part and parcel of learning.
Having leftists in society is important because they show us alternatives to what we normally believe is mainstream or established fact. They challenge views and teach us how to see things from a different perspective. It is up to us to judge or reject their political thought.
In Europe and America, leftists are an important part in political discourse. In fact, socialism is an accepted ideology everywhere in the world. That's why many political parties openly identify themselves as leftists.
Having leftists thrive in our political mainstream is the hallmark of a truly democratic way of life. Only when we accept them and defend their right to express themselves can we really claim to be democratic. Suppressing their views and even banning them from the free market of ideas is the most undemocratic act anyone can ever do.
And when leftists go to the mountains to propagate their ideals, then that's an indication that a society is being undemocratic because it cannot tolerate unorthodox views. When that happens, a society that claims itself to be democratic ought to be ashamed.
As Voltaire once said, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it!"
