To believe that there is only one person for you is nonsense...as if stars should somehow align. I think you choose your mate on the following basis:

1) Non-physical characteristics - sense of humor, intellect, sense of responsibility, sense of priorities, a good value system, drive to succeed, psychologically stable and even-tempered (should not hit women), and shared interests/passions

2) Physical characteristics - healthy, fertile/virile, traits you'd like to see passed on to your kids (nose, lips, height, athleticisim, etc)

If you get criteria #1 wrong, you'll spend a long time in misery. Choose well.
