To get the"big fish", the government needs to hire the best lawyers and prosecutors and that takes money. The government is losing talented public servants to the private sector because of low compensation. If we want results, we should be willing to spend for it.

The government's lifestyle checks have already led to the sacking of many government officials and personnel who failed the lifestyle check. The latest news is that 11 public officials are also being investigated for anomalies in their respective departments.

dang, a billion pesos? wow, thats a lot.

well, its actually common for them to do that. bisan gani sa mga meetings and other inquiries, they spend millions just sitting down and talking and arguing about issues. well, the saddest thing is, wala gyuy nasulbad. hahay.

Maybe it needs Billions of Pesos to fully eradicate the corruption in the country. You see, its not just a small problem that can be solve overnight, it requires power, dedication and more to achieve a free corruption country. Like what the Office of the Ombudsman plan to do, they are planning to use this radio stations to educate and disseminate the different information and the negativity of this graft and corruption by playing over the airwaves songs with lyrics that slam corruption in everyday life.

With this plan, they are hoping that a more frequent play of such songs on local and music television shows will amke the people more aware of the one of the country's biggest problem, the Corruption and thus expects the citizen to be cooperative to fully eliminate this problem.

I think this plan would progress. Aside from the fact that Pinoys are music addicts, avid fan of Radio staions/programs they would definetely get something from it and make a move. The good thing about it is that this advertisements could not only be heard by adults but by childrens as well...

yes, TINUOD JUD NA. The problem of our government is anti graft, anti corruption drive pero wla nman nangyayari. I work as casual employee in our city and i can really see the corruption in the lowest term but if u count the LGUs in the whole country doing it, millions are lost not to mention the NATIONAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES.

And one more thing, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE $ 1 million dollars given by the GOVERNMENT OF THAILAND to the PHILIPPINES for the FEASIBILITY STUDY of the FIRST PHASE of the MINDANAO RAILWAY PROJECT cagayan-iligan route

the senate has done a great job of cutting the NATIONAL BUDGET FOR 2006. Good job MANNY VILLAR, MAR ROXAS, and others!!! You really know that we need to pay our NATIONAL DEBT. Look at ARGENTINA it has paid their NATIONAL DEBT as early than target and also MEXICO they pay their NATIONAL DEBT in half.

GMA, US officials to meet on RP’s anti-corruption efforts

President Arroyo will meet with United States officials today to discuss the Philippines’ anti-corruption efforts being supported by Washington through the P1-billion Millennium Challenge Corp. (MCC) grant.

Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, US Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Charles Sethness, vice president for accountability of the MCC, will sign the grant.

Other US officials who will be present are Maria Longi, director of the threshold programs; Samuel Stratman, managing director for media relations; and congressional and public affairs and US Agency for International Development’s acting mission director Frank Donovan.

Mrs. Arroyo said the country’s reforms earned for the Philippines the P1-billion grant from the US to strengthen the country’s fight against corruption.

With the new funds, she said the Office of the Ombudsman and the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC) would be able to hire more investigators and prosecutors, and employ new technology in the fight against corruption.

Mrs. Arroyo matched the grant with another P1 billion from the government’s fiscal savings.

Under the MCC program, the Philippine government will accelerate the pace of sustainable and continuous efforts to stamp out corruption, plug revenue leaks, increase tax collection and ultimately channel more resources to poverty reduction programs and social services such as health care and education.

The program will also reduce corruption by strengthening the Office of the Ombudsman and enforcement in the Department of Finance and its Revenue Integrity Protection Service, the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Bureau of Customs. — Aurea Calica

Impress ba kamo?! E ano yung balitang we have been given a grant to finally eradicate this corruption in the country? This is just an update to what I posted yesterday, US and the Philippines yesterday formally signed a $21 million (P1.1 billion) grant agreement in support of a campaign to stop corruption in the country’s tax and customs agencies...
