‘We’ll still hunt down Lacson even if he’s close to Noynoy’

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will continue to hunt Sen. Panfilo Lacson despite his alleged closeness to leading presidential candidate Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, an official of the agency said.
The NBI issued the statement yesterday following speculations that Lacson, a known ally of Aquino, could be free from murder charges against him. Lacson who is still hiding is facing an arrest warrant for the murders of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in 2000.
Lacson’s staff at the Senate played a big role in Aquino’s campaign as all of them were deployed to campaign for the senator who is now leading by a huge margin against his rivals in the presidential race.
Meanwhile, the NBI official said it would be better if the senator will finally come out to answer the charges against him. “This is the opportunity for him to prove his innocence.”
Lacson repeatedly claimed he was being politically persecuted by the Arroyo administration for being a vocal opposition following his indictment for the double murder.
But the official said the case of Lacson was already elevated to court and it went through a long legal process that became a basis for his indictment.
According to the NBI official, the public and even the apparent next president (Aquino) knew that there was a legal process and he was duty bound to respect the legal process.
“The case is already in court. The case underwent a very long legal process before he was indicted. There was a statement of former Senior Supt. Cezar Mancao and there are documents to support the case of the prosecution panel,” the NBI official said.
The official added as to the fears of many that nothing would happen to the case due to reports that Lacson is a friend of Aquino, the NBI official said “it is only speculation.”
pati ning NBI crabs pud, friend ni noynoy i.apil. my gulay.

Angping to pursue cases vs Cojuangco, et al.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Harry Angping yesterday vowed to pursue the criminal cases he filed againts Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco and other top executives of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc) even as he prepares to leave his post soon after President-apparent Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, Cojuangco’s nephew, is sworn in.
A highly-placed Tribune source revealed charges of malversation of fund against Cebu Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Cebusoc) chairman Jonathan Guardo will be elevated before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) early next week. This is aside from the court case filed by Angping against Cojuangco for his failure to account to the P167,634,207.50 fund which the PSC gave to the Philsoc for the country’s hosting of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.
Angping will reportedly call for a news conference next week to reveal other details related to the two cases.
Guardo has yet to liquidate P10 million of the P300-million government fund entrusted to the province during the country’s hosting of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games. The fund was supposed to be spent for the construction and repair of venues. Guardo rechanneled the money to fund operations of the week-long athletic conclave.
A PSC source said the malversation case vs Cojuangco is also expected to progress, along with that the plunder case filed against Bacolod Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Basoc) chairman Monico Puentevella before the Ombudsman. The incumbent POC chairman has yet to liquidate P50.5 million.
“He is just making sure that everything will be in order before he leaves,” the source said on condition of anonymity. “As soon as the case is already elevated to the Office of the Ombudsman, the PSC will become the primary witness instead of being the complainant. The decision is no longer with the agency. It now depends on the Ombudsman.”
