Well it raised me some doubts too when they massively recalled the flash cards.
But with the data transmission, I think they are using VPN Over GPRS/EDGE/3G Networks if wala lang ko nasayop. Though it still uses TELCO services, pero these connections are tunneled, and are very hard to breach by simply sending data to their servers using regular transmissions. Plus these data are encrypted and unreadable during transmission.
IMHO, I agree on some of your points that the only vulnerable part of the system is the CF Cards. But at least someone from inside smartmatic has to perform it. We know how the system screwed up and counted wrong votes due to wrong instruction set in the flash cards.

Nindot ni for public aron makitah jud nga wala giusab.
Kung naay display walay vote buying kay mahadlok man ka man mag pabayad kai makitah man ang result dayun...hehehehe...
My point here is result transparency in detailed.

some additional info about the PCOS machine...
The proprietary software was developed by Dominion Voting Systems of Canada.
About Dominion Voting Systems: Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with offices in New York, Colorado and California, Dominion Voting Systems provides comprehensive voting solutions that emphasize security, accessibility and transparency at every step of the elections process. Dominion’s solutions are currently in use by over 400 jurisdictions in the U. S. and Canada, including 52 counties in the State of New York. Some 90,000 Dominion ImageCast Precinct Optical Scan Tabulators have been successfully deployed in elections around the world.
The generic machine is here.
The software was licensed to Smartmatic as "binary only" to be used in the PCOS voting machines. Smartmatic actually has no access to the source code. If the hired IT personnel has access to the machine, it could be as simple as operational or administrative. Basically, like a driver who is made to drive a car but cannot open a welded hood to pry into the engine.
