when there was no such thing as science, a "holy man" who kept a record of such occultations (based on earlier monk's observations of the movements of the moon and planets), could have announced something like this:
"People of this town! Tonight, you should repent for your sins! If you don't, in a few minutes from now I will make that bright star disappear! as a sign of God's anger against you sinners!"
And maybe the people would just laugh at him, but then, he waves his hand towards the Moon and Venus, and suddenly, Venus disappears (as predicted by his notes)! And the people bow down and cry before him, because they are scared and want to repent for their sins...and
gives money to the "holy man" as a form of indulgence! 
Science opens our eyes to the reality behind events that occur in the sky, and around us...now we are no longer fooled.
