First Summer Commencement Set May 15

Around 110 college students will make history as the first batch to receive their diplomas in a formal ceremony for summer school scheduled May 15 at the Silliman University Church.

The 1st University Commencement Exercises for Summer School provides students who have completed their academic requirements in the summer term the same experience of marching the stage to receive their diplomas in their academic gowns.

Most summer term graduates in the previous years returned to the University to attend the graduation ceremony in March. Others missed it after they have been employed already.

Keeping it more solemn, the graduation ceremony for summer school already integrates into it the traditional baccalaureate service.

Prof. Carlos Magtolis, Jr. is the graduation speaker. Professor Magtolis is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and will, by June 2010, assume the post of Dean of Students. He concurrently sits as the Chairperson of the University Spiritual Life Council.

    2 Outstanding Alumni Receive Honor

Two Silliman alumni who are previous recipients of the Outstanding Sillimanian Award (OSA) were cited by reputable institutions for their respective contributions in the field of justice and in the advocacy for women’s rights.

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) in San Diego, USA honored Dr. Rolando del Carmen with the 2010 Outstanding Mentor Award. Dr. del Carmen, who received the 1982 OSA for Legal Education, has been faculty of criminal justice for 35 years.

This is not the first time ACJS has honored Dr. del Carmen. He is the only individual in the academy’s history to have received the organization’s top three honors — the Fellow Award (1990), the Bruce Smith Sr. Award (1997), and the Founder’s Award (2005).

A Regents’ Professor within the Texas State University System and Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University, Dr. del Carmen is considered one of the United States’ leading experts on criminal justice law and has been honored in numerous justice arenas as being among the top in his field with productivity and quality of work.
On the other hand, the Institute of Plant Breeding of the College of Agriculture at the University of the Philippines Los Baños named a flower after Ms Domino Torrevillas, recipient of the 1980 OSA for Journalism.

The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis “Domini Torrevillas” was presented to Ms Torrevillas in recognition of her advocacy for women’s rights through her articles as a columnist of the national daily The Philippine Star and her civic involvements. The hybrid gumamela is unique for its bright orange petals that turn pink and purple near the center

Ms Torrevillas was quoted saying she was the “lucky 13th” recipient of a hybrid bloom from the Institute, and the first among the planned “women in media and the arts” series. (Information lifted from: On Dr. del Carmen: SHSU’s Communication Office website; On Ms Torrevillas: column “At Large” by Rina Jimenez-David on the online version of the Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Multi-Sectoral MoA to Protect PWDs Signed

A multi-sectoral partnership to protect the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) was forged at Silliman University late last month.

The Psychology Department of the University entered into a formal agreement with the Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation (GP Rehab) to help educate critical agencies in handling complaints from PWDs, along with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation (GWAVE).

Under the agreement, the parties will work together in running the one-year project, “Handling (Women and Children) Victims of Crime Who Have Disabilities.” The project is aimed at increasing the capacity of police personnel in accommodating cases involving PWDs.

Silliman President Dr. Ben S. Malayang, GP Rehab Executive Director Analou Suan, Policy Deputy Provincial Director Alet Virtucio and GWAVE Executive Director Cindy Uy signed the agreement.
