Vote God & LASER Test our candidates?
I came across this when doing my own research on as to who to vote for this May 10, 2010..
'Laser' test
The “Vote God” campaign seeks to infuse Christian values and spirituality into the electoral process by providing evangelical formation and pastoral support to both candidates and voters. Apparently, its objective is to help in choosing credible candidates and in the development of discerning voters. In other words it is a campaign for people to choose the way of God during elections instead of doing the same things as in previous elections where “the process of listening to one’s conscience is complicated by... the many competing voices out there: advertisements, media, surveys, misused cultural values (e.g. hiya, pakikisama, utang na loob etc.)”. The campaign therefore rejects “any compromise with the evils of vote buying and vote selling, and all its variations. It calls on people to identify, choose, and campaign for good candidates and not settle for the lesser evil” without however endorsing any particular individuals or groups...

..a “Laser Test” was formulated as a mechanism for helping people make up their minds on whom to vote. “Laser” is actually the acronym for lifestyle, action, supporters, election conduct and reputation which the electorate should find out from their candidates and from other sources. It involves the answer to the following questions:
Lifestyle
Does the candidate strive to live a modest and simple life as called for by the Philippine Constitution?
Action
Does the candidate manifest the ability to lead for the good of all Filipinos? Does he have “integrity of heart and skillful hands”? (Psalm 78:72). Does he have any mechanism in the office for him to be transparent and accountable to the public? Does he have a platform and performance record to prove his capability?
Supporters
How does the candidate treat his/her spouse, family members, relatives and friends? Can the people supporting him be trusted? How does he choose and deal with his election supporters especially those providing funds, so that the journey towards integrity for the common good would not be compromised?
Election conduct
Does the candidate explain his platforms and programs or does he just resort to personal attacks against other candidates? Does he try to win at all cost including buying votes or any of its variations? Does he follow the election laws and the rules and regulations on campaigning? How does he respond to these laws especially the simple law against illegal posters?
Reputation
Does the candidate have any pending case in court? How does the case/s affect him and his integrity? Is it possible for him to journey towards, or act with integrity in the current political system? How? If nobody except God knows that what he is doing may be wrong, is there a possibility that he will do it? In other words, is he God-fearing?
Actually, “Laser” also involves asking candidates to answer the questions and the dissemination of their answers through Church networks like parish church, chapels, schools, apostolic organizations and renewal groups in order “to establish a point of dialogue, create a space for conversion, provide a tool for pastoral support for candidates after elections whether they win or lose. So it is really a different and novel idea.
