Why? because technically and marketing-wise, it was positioned by Canon to be the model between the D90 and D300s. better than D90, feature-wise, but more expensive; while at the same time a little more cheaper than the D300s but lacks some features that the D300s has...
In the end, peer pressure will influence your decision more on what BRAND to buy than the features itself. Kung unsa'y gamit by most of your friends and colleagues, that's what you will end up buying...
But dont take my word for it... go to the stores and get a feel of the unit itself then check out their features. Some people buy cameras because the features are great. but when they use it in the real world, some of these features are not really that useful, they are just marketing gimmicks... designed to make you feel superior when you own them. But in actuality, you really will not use it that often.
Now get the 50D if you wanna feel superior when compared to the D90... or you can get the D90, 450D, D5000, 500D, D3000, 1000D, etc... and spend the money you save going on photowalks or road trips mastering the skill.
