do "clean install", RATHER than Upgrade.

    omgeee....

i am trying to do a clean install. but it's looking for the driver for my ODD. the driver i have is for vista. i had no problems with this when i installed Win 7 RC.

    was the Win7-RC 64-bit?
anyways... i can suggest a couple of possible solutions...
    - do u have access to a spare ODD? use that one instead.
    - go to BIOS and change IDE to ACHI or vice versa.
    - u might need to make a Win7 USB Flash Drive boot install (4GB minimum)

i rather go for the 3rd possible solution
faster and not prone for disk read error(s),

you have to formate your usb first to make it active and bootable partition.
then copy the contents of the Windows 7 installer to the drive.

in some cases this doesnt work without proper configuration.

You either do the USB option (not recommended and not supported by M$), or try another optical disk drive. Try changing the BIOS options for your optical drive too (AHCI), though I strongly doubt that it'd work. I'm inclined to think your optical drive is just not compatible with 64 bit Win7? Perhaps a firmware upgrade would fix it?

If you have been able to install Win 7 RC on your PC using that ODD without that error, then it could be that you have a damaged Win 7 DVD. Try to get another installer e.g. burn another DVD installer.
