    @adrianna

Suffice it to say that the mayor has, if i may quote you, complied with "some of these," as against Euguene who has done nothing of these: so, which one do you think has a better standing?

As to those that "ning allegedly evade og tax" that the mayor "ran after," the biggest of them are MCIAA and MEPZA. That's common knowledge, i can only wonder why you are not aware of it. In fact, Lapu-lapu City's tax cases against MCIAA and MEPZA are still pending in the courts. At one time, the city government even "auctioned" the properties of MCIAA; but the latter did not respond by filing a certificate of candidacy for mayor (hehe).

So, you see, Pelaez is not the only one that has been the subject of the city's efforts to collect taxes from. It's just that MEPZA and MCIAA are taking things more professionally. Officials of these agencies are correct in saying that the city government is only doing its job in so far as its tax collection drive is concerned.

As to the PEZA law, let's wait for the outcome of the court decision on the tax cases filed by the city against MEPZA because this law is one of the more controversial aspects of the on-going trials. In fact, virtually all companies inside the MEPZ are using this law to shield themselves against local taxes, too.

Hey, thanks for posting intelligent questions.

Why are we talking about unfounded presumptions, like pag equate ni Pelaez sa mga Larrazabals? Pelaez is Pelaez, Larrazabal is Larrazabal. Kay tungod puro sila negosyante e-generalize nalang jud diay? And besides, ning pay ug tax si Pelaez under the Peza law. They just bolt their attack against non-payment of taxes. I beg to disagree. Since Marina mall is an establishment within Special Economic Zone, the taxing jurisdiction belongs to Peza. And, its nt true that opon is being deprived of taxes. They have to understand that even if Pelaez is paying his taxes to the peza authority, Opon still has a share of Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of National taxes collected within the lgu concerned. Why would they persecute a man for just following the peza law? It would be illogical if pelaez would pay his marina mall taxes directly to the city despite the existence of such law.

Enough is enough..
Hey, let's not declare a person a criminal if the court has not declared so. Otherwise, that's usurpation of authority. Only the court can declare a crime as a crime.

Equation is a perfectly logical and scientific argument that has been in use since the Greek times. It's being used in math, argumentation, psychology, medicine and every other branch of science including politics. Equation is used precisely to rebuke unfounded assumptions and generalizations, unless you will again declare that as a criminal act, too.

And since you mentioned some services that you deem as insufficient such as road improvements and the like, that's exactly why the city wants to intensify its tax collection. You see, it's taxes that support government programs that you are talking about. With less taxes, supply of free medicines is short and services are limited.

Also, please understand that all these things that are happening around us are interrelated in one way or the other. Drug cases in lapu-lapu city are on the rise because drug peddlers abound in a city where employment is high. They wouldn't want to sell drugs in some remote area where people don't have incomes, right?

And so because of the presence of jobs brought about by businesses in the city, drug peddlers victimize many people here who end up in our jail. Again, the city ends up the loser because even prisoners need a budget, too. And budget is taken from taxes collected.

This is the downside of practically all highly-urbanized cities. In fact, our drug problem here is still tame compared to Cebu City and Manila. Talisay, which is not even a highly-urbanized city, has a higher drug abuse incidence compared to ours. In Cebu City, Pasil, which is just one barangay, far outnumber drug abuse cases in our entire city.

All said, the city needs to strengthen its anti-drug abuse campaign which, you guessed it, also needs funds from taxes. Now you see why the city needs all the taxes it can generate.

As to the lamp posts, these are considered as pieces of evidence in pending court cases involving the mayor. If he repairs, maintains, operates or even simply touches them, he will again be sued for tampering with evidence. That's the law on the preservation of legal evidence; on this, I will agree with you by saying, "screw the law, not the mayor."

    Default ARANGKADA Ni Leo Lastimosa

That's the voice of just one of a hundred radio commentators in Cebu. If we listen to one and only one, we become biased. If we listen to all, we end up confused. I suggest we go by what we actually see in lapu-lapu city.

Besides, if these businessmen referred to by leo lastimosa actually gave bribes, then they are as disgusting as the allegations that they are raising. If they are as courageous in naming this guy Harry Radaza, then they must also be valiant enough to come out in the open and file appropriate charges instead of just shooting off their mouths under the cloak of anonimity.

Am no chummy to this Harry, but the accusers should do something more legal and manly than just try to kill him with tsismis...

yes, i've seen pelaez around in ribbon-cutting ceremonies and in inauguration balls. i met him at a despedida ni shangrila-mactan, at the blessing of a high-end japanese resto in mandaue and at a birthday party in maria luisa. i also met him at a charity ball in marco polo, at a wedding reception at plantation bay and a private dinner party at the imperial. i further bumped into him in a former senator's birthday bash and at the opening of the lapu-lapu hall of justice in the presence of chief justice puno.

meanwhile, i have yet to see him during the feeding activities of the parish lay organizations, the "operation smile" activities at the Opon district hospital, the deworming of children at Pangan-an and San Vicente, the values formation seminars of Gun-ob, the regular meetings of senior citizens of Marigondon and Babag, the livelihood seminars for out-of-school youths in Pajo, the funeral wakes of poor families in Canjulao, the small-time basketball games for SK members in Pajac, the meetings of BECs in Basak and Pusok, the skills training for unemployed women in Poblacion and the annual fiesta activities of the Virgen dela Regla parish.

I've heard that Pelaez also holds social outreach functions in Punta Engano where he owns a well-appointed property. But he does these as a businessman and not because he is an Oponganon who cares about his fellow Oponganons.

In sum, Pelaez is a typical rich candidate who is closely identified only with the rich; even if he will sternly object to it, the truth is that Pelaez belongs to the category of traditional elite politicians who do not represent the masses at all. At best, he can only claim to know some poor individuals, but his associations with them are not without a definite purpose.

And people must be wary of such kinds of candidates. Let's remember what Winston Churchill once said, "THOSE WHO HAVE THE MOST WANT THE MOST!"

The way I see politics is just fame, money and vengeance. Actually, Ahong Chan and Jun Pelaez were fighting for corruption in Lapu-Lapu City. Instead of fighting corruption they are being entice with the corruption. Ahong Chan is simply vengeance with former boss, and Jun Pelaez is still vengeance with his failure to pay business tax and being oblige by the administration to pay his bill. People must realize what this two candidates with Lito Ruiz and Eugene Espidido are after... Let them finish...let us not start for a new corruption if that what you think politics in Lapu-Lapu City. See what you got in the radaza administration. See how Lapu-Lapu grows.. Look in to the lapu-lapu as a whole.

Let's have this piece by piece so people be awaken to the main interests of Ahong Chan, and Jun Pelaez. Ahong Chan is manok of Radaza, but it so happened for failure of Radaza to meet the favor of Ahong Chan. Ahong Chan won for councilor bet because of Radaza. Ahong Chan earned a lot compared to the oponganons...But VENGEANCE is the only answer that Ahong Chan wants, plus corruption that may happened when he will be hailed as Mayor. Realize the interest of Ahong Chan, not a good leader. A good leader has the moral ethics in respect to oponganons prosperity but not self-interest. Ahong Chan have come out to fight for himself's gain but not fighting oponganons to gain. Ahong Chan left Jun Pelaez in fighting corruption because of self-interest. Is it a good sign being a leader. Ahong Chan betrayed his former boss, how much more if he will be elected. It will happened the betrayal to the oponganons and more corruption will happen.
JUN PELAEZ -- this guy is simply fighting for his interest, fighting corruption are just posterity sake as a thrust to boost his campaign against Radaza administration. No good leader if you are a Business tax evader. No good leader if you destroy other names (Radaza), to gain peoples sympathy. No, no, no. As business man, no business man is willing to get some funds from his business. So what will happened if we allow Jun Pelaez to lead the oponganons, still a bigger corruption will happened. I am not convinced Ahong Chan and Jun Pelaez for involving in politics... Oponganons think of this.

Oponganons, I believe you are all educated, and clever enough not to be fooled by these topsy turby Chan and Pelaez in joining politics. I have heard people in Lapu-Lapu City complaining about politics going on. They said "wala jud ko ka-experience ingon ani sa Opon sukad kaniadto kung wala lang jud mag-apil-apil si Ahong Chan ug Pelaez sa Politica". Ahong chan and Jun Pelaez joined politics in Lapu-Lapu City for a shallow reason... Let's realize what is the real reason in joining politics, have these guys made descernment....?
