depends on the brand of your card. try confirming with the manufacturer first. i dont see why its not safe, although some may argue it could cause your fan to die sooner. also unsa na version imu gt? is it the one with the bigger fan?

standard fan ra sa 8800gt. pinaka safe gyud sa tanan ako nalang cguro e open ang side panel sako casing bati lang kai dali ra makasulod ang abog... ganahan gani ko makigswap nalang og standard na 8800gt inno3d.

i see, the reason i was asking is that there are actually two fan versions for the standard 8800gt cooler ang first release kay gamay ang fan and they improved on it by increasing the fan a little and it did help. i can attest to this coz i have used both versions, naa mga 3-4 degree difference. before you worry yourself too much try to see what ur actual idle and load temps are..maybe its not a s bad as you think. but the default 29% fan speed is definitely not enuf. bump it up to at least 40 percent for idle
