i guess it really depends on how the girl uses the term 'kuya'-- some uses it like an term of endearment/affection somehow how the japanese or south korean girls use 'sempai' or 'uupa' on their older boyfriends.
Others use it as the definition implies, 'big brother', keyword is brother. Hanggang diyan lang, because all she sees in you is a friend who is almost family. Overstep the boundary and she'll be remembering you with a shiver or disgust...
How would a guy know which is which.. in my humble experience, the guy should try this test...
Girl (sweetly) Hello Kuya
Guy (frowns) You know you shouldn't call me that-- I'm not that old and we're not related.
Girl : But I like calling you that. You're my Kuya. I see you as my Kuya.
Guy: Well, I don't see you as my little sister.
Girl: Ow? Well how do you see me?
Guy: A sweet girl who is a very dear friend, A very dear friend who I wish to be more.
Girl is quiet.
Guy: Please call me by my name. (dares) Call me by my name, please.
Now, in this IDEAL situation-- if the girl takes the guy's request and calls him by his first name then the guy has a fair idea that the girl MIGHT(!) see him as more than just a friend, more than just a 'kuya'.
But if the girl doesn't comply, persists ini using 'Kuya', then it means that she only respects you and no more, that the guy should respect too or else lose the girl's trust and friendship.
That's what I think.

naa ko kaila na pareha ani na situation... nag kuya ang girl pero nagkadugay nag kuyamos na hehehe tua na sila nag live-in na hinoun tungod lang kay nag "kuya" and ang worst kay minyo pa jud ang laki.. tsk.. tsk... tsk..
