i only reformat when OC'ing corrupts OS and can't be repaired, upgrade to a new version of the OS, severe virus corruption.

yes, it does help in the degrade of the hdd, remember it uses its spindle. (specially if mag wipe ka ng hdd it writes 0,1 to every sector)

average ko ata is 2-3x a year lang ako maka-reformat; as long as my wife remembers not to RUN any stuff from the web.

As what i observed since im working with computers... there shouldn't be any harm to the disk by frequent formatting. It doesn't matter how many times u format. But actually the question depends on how you format your HD. I remember my supervisor before told me that low level formatting does decrease the hdd lifespan and is not recommended. That is why there are some hdd that comes with zero fill capability that is less destructive so there would be no no physical contact at all between the platters and the r/w head...
formatting simply marks your hdd as virtually unused therefore no more harmful than its everyday wear-and-tear.
hdds are designed to be as robust as possible since they employ the most sensitive, moving parts in a typical server/pc environment therefore a few extra spins during a typical format will not jeopardize the hdd than a typical hash/encrypting/secure-wipe routine.

but guys just correct me if im wrong... i just based it on what i've observed....
