ARE U KIDDING ME?! L.A Lakers & CLippers are the favorites?! let's base it in facts, ok?! Phoenix Suns (54-2 - seeded #2 in the playoffs, made the WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS in '05 against the Spurs; LA Clippers (47-35) - seeded #6, LA Lakers (45-37) <--- both teams didn't made the playoffs last year....SO WHO'S THE FAVORITE?! which is which!?
Which is which? of course, Suns are the underdogs...obviously, because of their weak frontcourt, the Suns are considered to struggle along the way and lose the campaign. The Lakers have Kwame Brown, Chris Mihm and Brian Cook, and the genius of Phil jackson can propel the Lakers into the second round. The Clippers have Brand and Kaman, two of the West's best rebounders and post-up players, still an intimidating presence is felt and most of those people really think the Clippers will wrap up the series in 6.

Being not able to join the playoffs last year is not a reason that they're not the favorites... obviously, both Los Angeles teams have the upperhand but resiliency is what the Phoenix team is made of. And of course, with enough firepower and teamplay they outlasted the odds and went on to become the most-hated team in the city of LA. Nice noh?
ur being biased again just like level42....let's not include the past accolades of phil jackson because this is a different team (NO MJ, PIPPEN, HARPER, PAXSON, CARTWRIGHT, ARMSTRONG, RODMAN, KERR, KUKOC, etc...)...let's remember before the chicago bulls romped off to 2 3consecutive championships, he had to instill chemistry under jordan's awesome basketvball skills....the phoenix suns were the obvious favorites against L.A Lakers, simply how they played together (CHEMISTRY) against a team who ONLY has 1 player willing to do it all for his team to win...what they had during the NBA 05 playoffs was carried on during the regular season even w/o Amare...and they also brought new players w/ playoff experience (RAJAH BELL, EDDIE HOUSE, BRIAN GRANT, KURT THOMAS) for different purposes to play @ different positions which the lakers don't have! DOES BRIAN COOK PLAY UNDERNEATH THE BASKET?! I DON'T THINK SO! he is just like Kobe w/ a LACOSTE TAG on his mind although he doesn't have the physical basketball skills...CHRIS MIHN & KWAME BROWN are both mediocre in what they do down low compared to kurt thomas/brian grant, in any aspect of the game either offensively or defensively lupigon sila....I commend ur comment regarding their "RESILIENCY" indeed they showed it during their clippers series ONLY since they should have swept the lakers w/ NO SWEAT! they were just complacent and it took them 3 straight losses before they could tell to themselves that the playoffs is not a walk in the park....it's time to manifest your wants ---- CHAMPIONSHIP, to make a name for yourself, not for the media (agay maigo jud si steve nash ani) mau gani ngilngig kaau iya chiropractor kay natul.id ang mga spine niya mao ni-arang2 iya dinuwaan.....

    Game 2 stats:

Josh Howard 29 pts 7 rebs 2 bs
DeSagana Diop 4 pts 11 rebs 2 bs

^^ that's what the Mavs were missing in the 1st game..

    Game 3 stats:

Josh Howard 22 pts 12 rebs 0 bs
DeSagana Diop 4 pts 6 rebs 1 bs

^^ once again, that's what the Mavs were missing in the 1st game..

    FROM PETER VECSEY --- http://www.nypost.com/sports/64343.htm

May 28, 2006 -- HOOP DU JOUR WHY WON'T I be surprised if the Suns don't win another game in their 1-1 Spring Offensive with the Mavericks despite the showdown switching from Dallas to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4 tonight and Tuesday? Why does this Sumo Series remind me so much of the 2001 Finals showdown between the Lakers and 76ers when Philly won Game 1 in Los Angeles and then lost four straight?

Dirk Nowitzki's Mavericks certainly aren't the relatively friction-free Lakers of Shaq and Kobe, Title Team II. Still, the Mavs' might in numbers and enhanced multi-components unmistakably make them a prohibitive favorite.

No, I am not underestimating the Suns. I've never been around a group that shrugs off adversity so casually. Regardless of enduring injuries to Amare Stoudemire and Kurt Thomas, they've continued to flourish. But their latest impediment, Raja Bell's torn calf, is one broken chain link too many, it says here.

In their current state of reconstruction, the Suns are remarkably undermanned and undersized, as well as exceptionally susceptible to having the ball rammed down their esophagus.

I seem to remember the Lakers nearly asphyxiating them in six games with Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown. Now that I mention it, celestial Clipper Elton Brand nearly closed out the Suns by his lonesome in the tinted docks and the stained glass.

The Mavs boast two beastie boys. Nowitzki, who edged Steve Nash for my first place MVP vote, and Josh Howard cluster crushed the Suns for 59 points and 21 boards. If Howard could go for 29 and seven in Game 2, shouldn't he have been able to return to the court in Game 1 after spraining his right ankle 5:49 into the first quarter? I'm informed Dallas doctors refused to give their approval.

How long can the overused, but rarely abused Shawn Marion bear the brunt of the defensive, scoring and rebounding (33 in 81 minutes) burden before he breaks down like Barbaro, er, Nash? Was the two-time MVP winner's second half pointlessness (three assists, one field goal attempt, a make with three seconds left, not even looking for his shot) by choice, a result of excessive exercise, or a tank job to show up his coach and teammates?

"In hindsight, maybe I could've been more aggressive," Nash said. "I felt I was making the right play. That what I do, if double teamed, I give it up to the open man. There's a time to be aggressive, but I never felt I needed to be aggressive."

Invariably, the Suns' open man was Leandro Barbosa, who blanked nine of 11 tries after intermission, and 12 of 15 overall. Phoenix shot 40 percent in the second half. During the pivotal 12-2 takeover, when the Suns failed to cash in on seven of eight possessions, Nash and Boris Diaw, the team's primary playmakers, squatted on the sideline.

"What should I have done?" Suns coach Mike D'Antoni asked with a smile through gritted teeth. "I'm not going to tell Leandro to pass up an open shot to look for Steve. We don't play that way! And we're not going to play that way!"

Nash's ten shots and the Mavs' 36 free throw attempts to the Suns' 11 were indicative of what went down in Dallas. But a more telling stat might've been Nash sitting out eight minutes (11 total) in the second half as the Mavs outscored the Suns by five in the third period and seven in the fourth. Clearly, he was drained, and there's no mini vacation between Games 6 and 7 to look forward to, as there was in the previous round; it's one day on and one day off throughout.

Even when limping due to a sprained ankle, Marion never appears fatigued. I suspect he has yet to experience perspiration. Nonetheless, despite being as unique a 20-and-10 specimen that ever has played the game, the leapin' gnome can't guard everyone at once and can't man the frontline by himself.

Diaw provided decent support by hauling in 10 missed shots to complement his 25 points and six assists in Game 2, but Tim Thomas detracted from his 20-point production number by only managing to snag one rebound in 40 minutes of flickering candlelight.

Where's Marion's weak-side help coming from? If the sport were moth ball, D'Antoni might be tempted to take Kurt Thomas out of his dresser drawer. At 6-8 and 215, James Jones can offer only so much rebounding relief. Brian Grant? The Mavs should only be so lucky he gets a game.

In other words, the Little Nash Rambler and the Suns are rapidly running out of options. At the same time, Mavs coach Avery Johnson now recognizes the way to win is to slow down his Cadillac, and his players understand what happens when they get suckered into Phoenix's speed trap.

Dallas has sufficient depth to make every conceivable adjustment in terms of players (hence the DNP-CD demotion of unwieldy Erick Dampier and the promotion of the sprightly DeSagana Diop, a DNP-CD in Game 1), and tactics.

The difference between Games 1 and 2 was the Mavs' ability to fabricate a makeshift transition defense, make the Suns bend their backs by using the majority of the 24-second clock and avoid settling for jumpers.

As difficult as it is for Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse to pass up wide-open 15-footers early on the clock, they must do it, a member of the Mavs allowed. "We must stay balanced." After struggling in the first half, 3-9 and 0-2, respectively, each downed 11 in the second half, most of 'em when it counted most.

Meanwhile, the Suns have no choice but to keep on road-running and drilling from off shore. They are what they are - skilled at taking advantage of their shooting and athletic strengths, body and ball movement, quickness and smarts - and don't pretend to be anything different.

Why would they change even if they had the manpower to do so? Michael the Arc Angel has created a system that has worked against insurmountable odds for the regular season, two playoff rounds and one game out of two in this series.

The fewer players D'Antoni has at his disposal, the more the Suns appear to rely on outpost accuracy for salvation. How could any of us be surprised when, out of a huddle, 38 seconds left, Phoenix down five, D'Antoni diagrammed a futile 3-pointer for the in-bounding Thomas when seeking a 2-pointer was the conventional way to go?

Courtroom adjourned! Dimension doom! That's my perspective! D'Antoni's outlook is a fragment more optimistic: "If we hold serve we win the series."

I think they can...if ONLY BIG TIME CHOKE TIME Shawn Marion would play his usual regular season numbers 20pts 10rebounds....but for this game he only faired good in the rebounding department (1...he needs to score there's no doubt about it, he's the other all-star in this team....maau pa c boris diaw nga unheralded a year ago, he's having the pennies the colangelo's paid him worthy!
