PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the immediate deployment of a humanitarian team to Indonesia, where a 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed at least 3,000 people and displaced more than 200,000 others.
“The government shall deploy a humanitarian team soon to work side by side with the global relief effort. We have a duty to help our neighbors as well as the whole of humanity in times like these,” the President said.
The team will be composed of doctors, nurses and members of the Armed Forces who can help in the ongoing search and rescue operations in the central Indonesian island of Java.
President Arroyo personally sent a message of condolences to her Indonesian counterpart, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, yesterday morning.
