Visayan Pop Songwriting Campaign
VISPOP isn’t just another songwriting contest. It is a songwriting campaign aimed to introduce a more professional and competitive playlist of Cebuano songs on the radio.
One great thing that the Bisrock phenomenon has proven is that there is indeed a place for Cebuano music on the radio. The challenge now is how to alleviate the current state of Cebuano songs in such a way that it can fairly represent the ever-colorful and ever-dynamic Cebuano psyche and express a unique flavor in the wide spectrum of Cebuano sentiments.
Dili tanang Bisdak bastos. Dili sad tanang Bisdak kinaraan.
Labaw sa tanan, ang Bisdak dili gyud baduy ug bakya. Hinono-a, ang Bisdak pilian or pihikan sa iya gusto.
Thus the question of Cebuano music on the radio now becomes a discussion of the Cebuano identity. Kinsa man gyud ang Bisdak? Unsa man gyud ta? Do we truly believe we are fairly represented as a people by the current Cebuano songs we hear on the radio?
It is for this reason VISPOP approaches the situation with a sense of passionate urgency, providing educational opportunities in the form of songwriting workshops wherein possible entrants, especially the young, can hone and further professionalize their songwriting skills.
This is no time to just sit back and wait for the usual kind of entries to be submitted. We need to work together to answer to the urgency of this need.
This is VISPOP’s challenge to Cebuano songwriters: We are looking for good Cebuano songs that can break into current radio airplay, songs that have both a hook and a heart, songs that are radio-friendly, and yet are also substantial in their theme and approach.
Basically, just good Cebuano music we can all be proud of.
