you can read all about these formats here. basically, the difference between +R and -R are the backers for both formats. while there are claims that one format is better than the other, IMHO, it all depends on your writer. some writers prefer +R media (e.g. Lite-on) while some, -R media. +RW and -RW are the rewriteable equivalent of these formats.

it contains upgrades for your drive, mostly write speed updates for a given media or additional media codes. some firmwares come in executables that can be applied to your drive immediately while some require flashers.

be warned tho that if you misflashed your drive, it may become useless.

NEC ND-3500A or ND-2510A. unfortunately, NEC drives aren't available locally.

the BenQ DW1620 is also a good drive and has been gaining popularity lately. it has good write quality and supports quality scanning. don't know if this is available in cebu but you can order it in manila.

You're right about the NEC. I never had problems with it. I prefer using an 8X DVD+R. If you're into burning movies CSS + Region Free will do a great job bypassing the CSS code. Rent it, burn it, and please don't try to sell copies. Keep for your own personal library...

OT: AFAIK, under the fair use rights, you're only allowed to make backups of copyrighted material you personally own. that means backups made from rented materials are already considered illegal. just an info (tho i don't know if this is also true here in the philippines)

    DRIVE: SONY DL DRU-720A

    Media:
Any brand as long as burned at 4x. Even the 4pesos disks. Haven't got bad burns at 4x speed.
If I burn generic disks at 8x, I get bad burns. I can only burn iMation, Sony, RidData disks at 8x.
