Lovers would think it's normal to send them emails. Friends think they're special.

How about have them both? Not because you are a lover you can't be good friends. Be a lover and be a good friend at the same time.
IMO, love is a choice. We won't fall to someone if we don't acknowledge them. And acknowledging someone or something is already a choice.
