im not an expert on this breed but i have a GSD.shes very gentle and loving to my family esp. my 5 y.o. son and mga katabang diri sa house and the people outside our neighborhood.so far shes a very good family dog,companion dog and guard dog.very loyal to me.

my take is malinois
budget wise malinois is smaller than gsd from food to their accessories
i prefer their squared stance
regarding work, i think if a dog well-trained he will be both quick and accurate
well-trained though does not mean the dog finished all the courses
dogs needs continuous training to motivate their brains to work properly

i agree with some of ur statement but dont exactly agree with the last part coz NOT all well trained dog is fast & accurate.& quickness to react & perform is not dependent in training but rather based on the individual dogs' instinct & drive,which most belgians have but mostly, because of their intense eagerness to get a certain reward they would perform a task set before them,as fast as they could but not exactly accurate.for example:u ask them to fetch a basket,they would ran to it & instead of 'grabbing' the basket handle properly,as the intensity inside their brain goes, they just grab any part of the basket as long as they could get it fast.whereas,compared with most GSD's,"Pahimutang' cla mu perform ug task although not as fast as the belgians,which i like more.thats what i ment with my previous statement regarding speed & accuracy..

to some it up the only advantage of the belgians over the GSD's is their rare incidence of orthopedic problems (but high incidence of epilepsy & epistaxis or nosebleed),smaller & lighter frame,intense drives,stamina & tenacity,which is useless IF the would be owner just wanted a low key dog to walk,to do minimal training or cage it most time of the day coz a breed with intense energy of a working dynamo being shut down with nothing left to do,would basically end up being neurotic & destructive.
the GSD's,in a similar scenario would also be the same.but given their moderate to high energy level can contain their drives more & although larger,more elegant & slower than its belgian counterpart,is capable of being an all around dog,accurate & versatile in many ways,from its conformation to its genetic capabilities.why? we'll how many breeds are developed from the belgian malinois...others say the HUNGARIAN MUDI has a little malinois extraction,so is the tervuren & laekenois which is a genetic divertion of the malinois.but with the GSD?its a lot...the Dobermann,the Hovawart,the Chinook,the Harzzer Fuchs,the Leonberger,the Lappland reindeer dog,the Jamthund,the Picardy shepherd dog,the Shiloh Shepherd,the King Shepherd,the Saarlooswolfhond,the Czechoslovakian wolfdog,the Byellorussian ovtcharka to name a few with others still on the making.a proof of its genetic & physiological capabilities..
