Updating the bios is completely unnecessary. Some overclock enthusiasts does it to alter the settings ( voltage, clock/memory speed, fan speed or reflash old revisions to a new one e.g 8800GT = 9800GT, 9800GTX = GTS 250 )permanently. If you're not an overclocker, or overclocks a bit do it via software. CCC, Nvidia Control Panel and some third party tweaks like rivatuner and ati tool. Leave the bios as it is.

^ read what he said, i'll provide the complications kung mo-palpak ka;
if you overclock via software, you simply need to restart the computer and most of the time, the tool resets your overclock or the computer isn't loaded with heavy graphics yet to crash giving you time to reset your settings on the tool.
now, if you flash your VGA BIOS with an unstable overclock, the video will just go blank, you would need a second graphics card, and a floppy disk or bootable USB that contains the original ROM file to re-flash the card to its default settings. however, if you have galaxy graphics card(s) simply restart the computer and BIOS will revert back to its original settings kay dual VGA BIOS man ni sila.
