one thing though that should at least minimize negative reactions to the Sinulog Photo contest is that SFI should at least
    1) Brief the judges to follow strictly the rules. When rules said "the float, Higante and Puppeteers must include the whole structure and not the personalities on board the float. Float, Puppeteers & Higante shots should include the carrier inside the contraption.", that should be strictly followed!
    2) Tell the judges what SFI expects in the winning pictures...note that nowhere in the Fluvial/Procession category winners showed what really happened during the fluvial procession...
    3) The judges - whatever nationality, religion, affiliation - should be required to attend at least most of the Sinulog events to familiarize themselves on how the photo entries should come out... for them to also learn the difficulties we photographers took.. and for them to know the actual environment during the events... and - more importantly - for them to decide whether the entries they chose were truly representatives to showcase the entire Sinulog event..
    4) Last and foremost, the judging time (8 hours?) should be increased considerably... to choose the best among more than 11,000 pictures in so short a time SIMPLY DEFIES logic... last year, the judging time lasted up to 9 or 10 pm with only less than 9,000 entries... now the entries almost doubled and the judging time were done at about 5 or 6 pm... NOTE THAT THIS IS THE SAME PREDICAMENT OF THE CONSISTENT WINNERS as well as the non-winners... the winning entries may not necessarily BE their BEST BETS...for the non-winners, we thought we had better entries...
....Life is a learning experience... we could actually learn from the consistent winners... we will all do better next year... compete with last year's best...after all, Photography should be fun...

this is a very great idea.

possibilities that some "BETTER" entries are missed out.

To level the Playing Field (between the Rich, Middle Class & the Less fortunate) entries should be limited
per contestant. If its true someone submitted 90 entries, meaning 80 of which were paid @30 each additional, then fair play isn't present. wala e ka sukol ang mga pobre.
Unless this contest is only for the rich.
If the contestant himself has confidence which amongst his photos are the best, the selection should come from the constestant himself. This way, dili na mag labad ang utok sa mga judges.
Selection process on which is the best amongst the best should start from the contestant himself.

yes, it shall be good to limit equally the number of photos to be passed and no option for add-up for such valid reason/s.

Lastly, i have heard that the quality of the printed entry was also given so much weight in judging.
Duna mga nindot na kuha (in raw) pero didto ra na pa print sa ordinary printing shop backstage na dayun.
Lusot kaayo ang mga nag pa print ug Metallic paper ... Well the final product is the key in photography and that is indeed the Print.
i remember when i passed mine, an officer from there personally checked my photo and commented on the paper I used that its very thin. he didn't know that its a professional-level paper, resin coated, and curl resistant. i have thicker(larger gsm / thicker than usual papers used in photo labs) papers here but they curl and not resin coated.

maybe soon someone will pass a laminated entry^^

it is my conviction that those who won (and even those who didnt win) really tried their best that if ever their entries would win, that even we as photography enthusiasts who also know how to look and scrutinize a picture, could really say that it's just worthy to be called a winning picture. i have seen some winning entries & i would really say that they're as worthy the previous winning entries (except of course those who flagrantly violated the rules.)

But what disappoints me is that most probably than not, these winning photographers submitted more than 10 pictures as their entries.

for me, even if some pictures are also noteworthy, they get lesser attention because of the number of entries being submitted by some photographers. what attention would 10 entries get, compared to 300 entries submitted by a photographer?

nahimo na hinuon ug sort of a RAFFLE ang atong mga pictures na the "more you submit, the bigger chance of winning." i suggest, na if ing-ani nalang diay, maayo pa, nag RAFFLE DRAW nalang ta sa tanan entries. anyway, we all tried our best to submit the best among all our good shots taken during sinulog!

I wonder if most went to the Foundation a few hours after judging and seen the winning prints displayed...

I wonder how many metallic prints made it thru
or those high-gloss prints that cost 7-12 pesos was mistaken as metallics that cost 10x as much

photography isnt about who is rich or who is poor... but it is more of who has the talent and the EYE
If I think the contest is biased and unfair... I will never ever join again, and shoot Ati-Atihan instead.

I had the same concern about metallic prints during submission....The winning pictures - as posted - are still at the foundation as of last night.. incidentally, didn't notice any metallic prints among them....

i think what they meant by metallic paper is the satin photo paper. the thread textures on its surface mimic a silver metallic look.
