good point. though knowing what to do can make a big difference between a snapshot and a something frame worthy. many newbies start out with guns-a-blazing. but as you go on you start to define your own "rules" of what works and what doesn't... some just take a little bit longer than others

You hit it dead-on. When I first got back to shooting (with DSLRs), a large majority of my shots were just plain bad. So I decided to read up on the "rules" and whatnot, and improved, at least in my opinion. And along the way realized what I liked to shoot and the "style" appropriate for that.

For some (most?) newbies, the progression will be the same. It's just human nature to try and improve once you see that most of your shots are bad...

the sunny day f16 rule is not a rule of composition... it's a standard that film and sensor manufacturers follow... but that's for another thread topic

I learned something new today... While I knew that the Sunny 16 Rule was a technical guide, I never knew that it was based on a manufacturing standard. Thanks for the info!

well, it wasn't only ment to be just a manufacturing standard but it was made so for whatever film (back then) or digital camera (now) the exposure will always be the same. whatever film you use on a bright sunny day the standard exposure would always be f16 for aperture and 1/iso for film speed.

so for iso 100 it should be 1/100. but since most cameras don't have 1/100 the closest was 1/125. from there you could adjust accordingly depending on the light. and if you rather use other shutter speeds or apertures you'd add and subtract stops to balance it accordingly

they even had cheat sheets (aka exposure charts) printed in film cartons...

and many old cameras back in the days even had them printed directly on the bodies...

my first slr was a Nikkormat FS... full manual camera with no meter...

yup... that's me at the age of two happily clicking away. it was my dad's back then and he later gave it to me when his eyesight started failing him and all his pictures started coming out blurry.

anyway, taking the good old sunny day f16 rule to heart and keeping those cheat sheets in my head I had the ability to set exposures on the fly and know in my heart the photo came out well... and that was shooting film!

it's actually a nice exercise to try. go full manual and try setting exposures based on the sunny day f16 rule without taking a peak at the meter. with a lot of patience and practice setting exposures soon becomes second nature... and all those neophytes around will gaze at you in awe

..this is so true... not only with camera...designer products... materialism ...only in the Philippines. In other countries, people don't care what brand of camera, shirt, even car you drive. .. takes me back.

yes its important to know the basics. always. if you spend a 5-6 figure price tag on equipment, u might as well learn & study the aesthetics. After that, experiment.

rules of photography are merely for academic purposes .. so that all who study photography has the same principles , SOPs , and know hows...once youve learned with it ,,,u tend to expirement about it and break boundaries = breathtaking shots!!!
