Just because we paid, and the spectators did not does not give us the right to act as if we can do whatever we want to do inside the cordoned area. It also is not right to pass the blame to the police/marshalls since they already had their hands full managing the crowds. It is one's integrity to act accordingly when there i s no authority around. Alangan man sad maghuwat pa ka badlungon for you to behave.

While it may be true that not all of us acted like this, unfortunately, we will get generalized for the acts of others, whether we want to or not. It should be incumbent upon us, the photographers, whether amatuers, hobbyists or professionals, to act with enough professionalism so as not to damage the PRIVILEGE, not RIGHT, being given to us to document the event.

It was my first time to shoot the Sinulog Grand Parade as a registered photographer. My initial comment during the first 5 minutes of my shoot was "grabe ka daghan og piranha!" They would simply swarm the contingent, esp the queen, and point their God-forsaken cams and lenses right in the face of the dancers, even blocking their way from moving forward. Some, no...a lot of photographers would not even leave their spot in front of the contingent even if they have already taken their shots. Ako ra ika.ingon...mga BAGA JUD OG NAWNG!

If the spectators didnt enjoy the Sinulog because of the photographers, then, I, as a registered photographer for Sinulog, also did not enjoy as much taking photographs because of these stupid photographers who does not have the delicadeza to stand aside after taking their shots.

Even mga well-known photographers, professional at that, behave this way. And if it simply because of the urge to win a photography contest, I can only wonder what other morals, principles and our integrity are we willing to throw out the window when the stakes are much higher than just a simple photography contest.

If you were one of these, then I apologize for my choice of words...but that is simply how I feel, and my view of you! My suggestion would be to let photographers who want to take part of Sinulog as a registered one, undergo a 1-2 hour briefing on how to act and behave during the Grand Parade before they are allowed to register. It may be a lot of hassle but if that's what it takes to improve the Sinulog, then that is what it takes.

Amen to some of your statement!

as to your other statement... welcome to the world of photography.... as what zubano said "but then again its a dog eat dog world."

hehehe.. that sounds good. limit the photographers. one more thing di ba naa may rope beside sa road? nya naa pa jud rope every contingent? much better sad nga ang mga photographer dili musolod beyond sa contingent's rope kay reklamo sad ang uban nga choreographer, lisud na daw isayaw as ilang mga dancers, maypag kana daw mga photographers mao nalang daw pasayawon. wahahaha. amo posting kay 10-12nn wa kaayo photographers sa one mango dapit. hehehe, pwede pa gud mi ka puli2x ug shooting the shooter!!!! pagbalik nako after the rain (around 330pm) didto na ang syagit2x, hoi padaplin mo! (kay ang naa sa atubangn naka 50mm, some are wide & some are kit lens, then siya ra naka L na 200 man guro to)
ang balos sad sa naa sa atubangan: saba dha ilisi na imong lens, nya naa sad ni ingon, bantay bitaw ug di ka kadaug ha.
mas maayo sad after the deadline of registration, organizers mg conduct jud ug gen meeting or briefing sa mga participants of the photo contest.... daghan na kaayo naa dslr sa cebu, mura sad ug sakyanan magkadaghan, mgka trapik...

wow.. ana di ng photography? HASULA!!! pakaulaw lng mo sa mga bisita diri sa CEBU, they come here to watch SINULOG not the photographer. Sorry for harsh words, pero makita jud nimo ang gipangbuhat nila kung spectators ka. Siguro photographers try to become one of the spectators, pra makita nila ang gipang buhat sa ila mga kauban na mura langaw. You guys should think na naay gatan-aw.

AMEN to genesis's post. For me this is a big dilemma to the Sinulog foundation on how they should impose stricter guidelines for photogs covering the street parade. Assigning photographer's both in the route defeats the essence of street photography. Also, if they will limit the coverage inside the sports complex then who will document the happenings in the streets?

The best solution I can think of is that each contingent will be cordoned from these photogs and other spectators wanting to go near the dancers - similar to what the Lumad Basakanon contingent is doing. But then again what about those not so big time contigent who can't afford hiring additional people?

Though SFI still has another year to think this over and come up with a better planning and solutions =)
