Mass Effect 2 ready for massive debut

It’s not hard to find world-leading technology designed by Canadians at the annual Consumer Electronics Show here in Las Vegas. All you have to do is check out the video-game displays.

At the gigantic Microsoft booth, one of the games receiving a prominent showcase is Mass Effect 2, the sequel to the 2007 smash hit from Edmonton’s BioWare. The first Mass Effect, a Star Wars-like science-fiction role-playing/action game, garnered universal acclaim and sold more than a million copies in its first three weeks of release.

The sequel, also exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console and PCs, will be released on Jan. 26 and is expected to be one of the first big hits of this year.

The game was designed by a staff of 150 in Edmonton, with help from BioWare’s studio in Montreal. Casey Hudson, the game’s executive producer and project director, spoke with CBC.ca at CES about the upcoming game.

The second installment of this planned trilogy, Mass Effect 2 continues to follow the evolution of Commander Shepard’s character as he embarks on a suicide mission in order to once again save humanity along with the rest of the universe. This time around Shepard will set out to recruit some of the galaxy’s most dangerous operatives while uncovering several secret missions along the way. Saren and his army of Geth were challenging enough, but the struggle Shepard will face in Mass Effect 2 will make his original adventure seem like a walk in the park.

    Why it will rule:
We haven’t been this excited for a game release in quite some time. The first Mass Effect changed the way we looked at the Action/RPG genre and proved that the folks at BioWare have enough creativity to keep themselves in business for years to come. Building upon everything that made Mass Effect our 2007 Game of the Year, BioWare has also responded to the gamer feedback to not only improve upon their original release but send it light years ahead of its predecessor. Everything from the game’s visuals, to the beefed up combat system, to the new characters we’ll meet and new worlds we’ll explore have us chomping at the bit to finally get our hands on Mass Effect 2. A likely contender for 2010’s Game of the Year is just around the corner. January 26th can’t come soon enough!

    Why it might not:
We’re hard pressed to come up with a single reason that BioWare’s sequel will fall short of its mark. I suppose by some stretch of the imagination, the game’s developers could have suffered from some kind of memory loss and forgotten how to tell an amazing story. Or perhaps they really haven’t gotten rid of the elevators which are probably the slowest in the universe. Maybe we’ll have to spend hours collecting mineral samples everywhere we go by repeating simplistic button combinations. I suppose if Seth Green’s character Joker ends up having a twenty minute long stand up routine in the middle of the game it could take some of the wind from its sails, but we’re more than confident his comic jabs will be kept in check.

RPGamer.com has a special on Mass Effect 2!

I loved the story in Mass Effect, and it only appears to have been improved upon in the sequel. Storytelling is now more organic in Mass Effect 2, but also more dynamic. Rather than going from story segment to combat segment and back again, Mass Effect 2 naturally transitions between these segments. Quick-time button events may pop up during conversations, enabling you to save a dying soldier and such, but you can miss them if you're not quick enough. Characters feel more lifelike through active camera use, different staging during cutscenes, and prettier graphics. In other words, the best part of the first game may have gotten even better. Every single story choice made in the first game can be directly loaded into Mass Effect 2 to boot.
