Newcomers will enjoy Mass Effect 2!

Also, you don’t have to worry if you didn’t play the first game at all, because Mass Effect 2 subtly gives you details into why you’re in the situation you’re in. Of course, it would be incredibly boring if you weren’t thrown into a crisis right away, and BioWare won’t disappoint you. The most interesting thing is that the Normandy ends up being attacked by an enemy even though it’s in a stealth mode at the time. When it jumps into interactive state from the myriad (and gorgeous) cutscenes, you’ll get a smooth tutorial that takes you through the necessary controls and leads you into the first story elements.
