I could not compare to what you "think" you are doing for my country.. the age difference as well as the economic status can say for that.. but to the best of my capacity, I am doing what I can for myself as well for the people around me..
but why are you, an American, living here in the Philippines? I don't mean any offense, and I do not wish any inhospitability, but can you not do all those for your own country too? or you are not given a chance? Don't get me wrong, but I'm well aware of 1st world and 3rd world country differences.. Americans trying to "help" other nations, yeah right.. I would really love to believe that, but most of the time, there's always an ulterior motive. Back in your country, you're just like everybody else, but when you "step down" and come to countries in Asia, you become a celebrity.. I don't see that as anything charitable at all.. it's nice you're doing that, but do you really know what is good for us, when you cannot even do the same for your own country?

I am only volunteering to help those who are asking for my assistance. The skills I have learned over the years are in demand here. Sorry I am not selfish and self serving so I fit your profile. This concept that American can not help Filipinos is a little disturbing. I am amazed that this seems to irritates you somehow. When I decided to retire and move to Surigao, I am sorry that I did not consult you first. If you have such a low opinion of the Philippines, how do you ever expect the country to progress? It is minds like your's that this country is depending upon to help it raise to 1st world prominence. You can make a big positive change for your country if you try. Everyone can. But you have to try.
The US is already on the leading edge of commercial agriculture technologies, but in the last 20 years hobby gardeners have started a organics movement that few countries can rival. This mass movement generates the knowledge pool that I use here. I have a personal horticultural library that I shipped here when I moved. This resource is helpful to the local farmers. So I share it, I accept no pay, I pay my own travel expenses, buy my own meals, and help any one that want the help. I am trying to help a small group to improve their lives, and I hope they will pay that forward and teach and influence others. I try to teach green technology that will help preserve the ecology.
When I retired My wife wanted to return to the Philippines to live. To allow her to be with her family and childhood friends. She had moved and lived with me in Texas for over 20 years, she did that sacrifice for me, so when she wanted to return I was more the glad to make the same sacrifice for her. I also wanted my son to understand what the term "Pinoy" meant being it is his heritage too and someday he may choose to live here and would be able to assimilate more easily.
I came to work on our little 6-1/2 hector farm more as a hobby, to keep me busy in my retirement. The local Agriculture Agency reps took interest in what they saw. They saw serious benefits to the small farm society that is the Philippines. The US is a large commercial farm community, the expenses of land, equipment, and taxes have driven out the small farmer. Organics is not cost efficient for large mega farms such as the US, that is why you see the massive usage of commercial Fertilizers, insecticides, and Herbicides. This is not the same as here in the Philippines. The technique I employ seriously increase of crop production, produces healthier food product and helps save the ecology.
As far as being a celebrity or seeking accolades that is for someone that is far more narcissistic than me. I do not like phrase and am uncomfortable in the limelight. I am very content to just sit quietly in the background and remain obscure. I much prefer just being down to earth, because pride is an evil monster to feed. I am a very simple man. That is just how God made me, and I do his bidding, and not yours. I hope my work affects millions, but there is no real reward except knowing that I had a hand. What you think they are going to make me President, build Statues, make me Philippine's "Kano of the Year"? Get real. Volunteer work does not pay in terms of money, besides the Filipino politicians and officials will take all the credit. My reward is knowing that I doing something bigger than myself. You may not understand this, but for some of us that is more than enough reward.
your personal choices are yours to make.. I have no question about that.. but to cross over and make it appear like its patriotic or patronizing our country, that's something else.. that's exaggeratingly blowing your own horn/trumpet.. you reveal your true intentions more and more.. so what if you were able to retire at age 50.. so what if you married a politician's daughter of "elite" status, so what... is marrying a white lady any less?
No this was only brought up because you were trying to pursue a very personal line of questioning, and you know it was meant to be a little insulting. You had a preconceived concept about me. You wanted to put me in your box, and are still trying to do this even now. If I told you all I have done and accomplished in my life you would not believe it, accept it, or respect it; in fact you would still try to find a way to be condescending. No one ever believes the truth anyway and the truth is always more interesting.

love has no bounds, but it doesn't make any other choice any less, which still begs me to question why you really chose to marry a Filipina instead of an American girl. I know very well how prized and sought after our Filipina girls are, oh yes, I am.. they are the hardest and toughest girls in the world to court/woo, and some of them may not be as "graceful" or "good-mannered" as the ladies in high courts, but they do know how to make a man really feel "loved"..
I had married a white girl before and divorced after 5-1/2 years of marriage, Marines is hard on marriages. I was 27 and met a girl that I fell in love with. Simple I was not looking, it just happen. When I met my wife it was 24 years ago, there was no internet dating websites or any of the trappings of the modern date scene. The Marines made it difficult, my government made it difficult, my family and society made it difficult. Questions like, "what's the matter a white girl is not good enough?" I loved my wife so I followed my heart. We were young and free to do as we wished, and I have no regrets. We have been through a lot together both good time and bad. Relationships have moments of laughter and tears, it is the ability to communicate and compromise that make them work.
But if you are honest, you also know that a Filipino woman also can be just as evil as any woman in the world as well. There is a bigger problem when Americans marry Filipino women, all their brothers want you to buy them everything they desire, Motorcycles, Jeepnies, Houses, vacations, College educations for all their kids, and the whole family thanks they should be able to retire. Every relative alive thinks you are rich, and wants to constantly borrow money. And since you are Kano they do not need to ever pay you back or even say thank you. When ever you walk the streets ever street hustler, con artist, beggar and little kid sticks their hand out and says, "give me Pesos." That is a hard truth chief. So don't act like marrying a Filipino girl is such a easy task. Your little dream world is a real nightmare for many Americans. God helps me keep it real.

Yes when I met her I knew I would spend the rest of my life with her. I even knew a many military man marry bar-girls and prostitutes too and then took them back to live in the US with their families, most I ever met thought they were doing it for love.

gosh, took me awhile to reply back.. been away looking at all these overblown, really huge museums in DC. come to think of it, i think America is the new Rome, all these structures have similar remnants in Europe's Rome.. and reading all that message in the Lincoln Memorial makes me even think more that America was built more by the white people of Europe, than its original inhabitants the native indian americans.. whatever happened to them?

Being American is not a race of people, rather it is an idea. Americans are all races of people. The earliest permanent Filipino Americans to arrive in America landed in 1763, and helped create Saint Malo, Louisiana and Manila Village in Barataria Bay. They served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War. They owned slaves, killed native Indians and help build America into what it is today.
What ever happen to the Native Indians? they were over run by the push of progress and land grab expansion. Most were displaced and forced to live on designated land. They use to own America, now they just own Casinos and take away American's houses, cars, and banking accounts through payment of gambling debts.

Any Recon Marine worth his weight in salt has read the "Art of War" it was on the Commandant's Reading List. It was also required reading when I attended Business school at U of H, it is applied in Japanese and Korean business practices. In fact I have it downloaded on my computer as an ebook.
