I think that's not the essence of the psalm here. Rod and staff are usually associated with shepherd, and God is normally considered Shepherd and Jesus is the lamb.

Anyway, parenting involves different kinds of discipline methods. I grew up being "beaten" (I used your term) by my parents. They would spank me with slippers just to keep me in line, so to speak. Yet I never harbored any ill will against them. Instead, I learned to love them all the more. I guess it really depends on how parents would explain such form of punishment to their children. For me, it's important they understand the logic behind spanking or hitting.

Sinners man ta tanan, wala gyud perfect sa ato. Accepting God as our Lord and saviour will not exempt us from not sinning in the future, but the good news is, He already forgave our past, present and future sins. The question is, naninguha ba ka nga dili makasala? or nagpadayun ra ka sa pagpakasala as a lifestyle? Si Lord ra ang nakakita sa kasin kasing sa tawo. However, we can be a Christ-like example if our hearts and minds will reflect on our actions. Plus important gyud nga nakakita si Lord nga naniguha gyud ka ug please niya. =)

On my part, i cannot judge anyone, Only He can. Kung naa may issues that doesn't follow God's will, then it is an issue between the concerned party and God. I can pray for the concerned party though. Powerful gyud ang prayer!

I'm not claiming that is the essence of the psalm there. I'm just following up on the previous post's interpretation.

I've nothing against discipline.. but discipline should not be forced. That's just my opinion though.. you have yours. If you think that you need to force discipline to your children by spanking them, then go ahead.. in my case, I will discipline my child, but obviously, if he doesn't want to be disciplined, I should find other ways for him to learn. The child will learn in his own times and ways.. and as a parent, all I can really do is just be there for the child when he needs me.
