NASA lost moon footage, but Hollywood restores it
WASHINGTON – NASA could put a man on the moon but didn't have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission.
In an embarrassing acknowledgment, the space agency said Thursday that it must have erased the Apollo 11 moon footage years ago so that it could reuse the videotape.
But now Hollywood is coming to the rescue.

NASA releases clearest videos yet of 1969 moonwalk - CNN.com
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- NASA released newly restored videos Thursday of two U.S. astronauts taking the world's first steps on the moon.
The images were released just four days before the 40th anniversary of the historic event that captivated the world on July 20, 1969.
The release, part of a larger Apollo 11 moonwalk restoration project, features 15 key moments from the historic lunar excursion, NASA said in a statement.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong, now 78, was the first to venture onto the moon's surface after the lunar module Eagle landed on the so-called Sea of Tranquility. Following him was Buzz Aldrin, now 79.
The videos are far superior to the initial dark, fuzzy images people watched on their television sets at the time, although they are far from crisp.

Walter Cronkite, the iconic news anchor who brought the moon landings to the living rooms of so many, passed away earlier today. He was 92 years old.
I don't know whether to call that ironic or fitting.
His reportage of the moon landings is what the American public will forever remember. In the comic strip "Wizard of Id," the priest character declares in his homily, "In the beginning God created the universe. Except for the moon, which was created by Walter Cronkite."
And THAT's the way it is (as Cronkite would say at the end of every broadcast).
Rest in peace, Uncle Walter.

People can say what they want, or believe what they want to. I'm tired of monitoring who believes in what anymore. There are more important things to monitor in this universe than some guy wanting attention.
