Respect is earned, not forced. You cannot force others to respect you if you are not respectable. How can you respect anybody caught cheating to "win" the elections? How can you respect somebody who does not fulfill her promises? How can you respect someone who shamelessly and repeatedly violates the Constitution she has sworn to defend? How can you respect anybody who prevents government officials from testifying in investigations that may reveal shenanigans in her administration? How can you respect anybody who is desperately trying to change the Constitution to stay in power?

And look who's talking? We can throw the charge of lack of respect back to GMA. She showed lack of respect for the people by stealing the presidency from the person they elected. She fooled the people by making false promises. She made the lives of the people more miserable by imposing more and more taxes. She has even tried and keeps on trying to prevent them from speaking out their opinions and feelings.

Pangilinan is not alone in having no respect for GMA. Millions of Filipinos feel the same way. And GMA has nobody to blame but herself. Caught with her hand in the cookie jar, she refuses to face the music and accept her punishment. Instead, she dodges the issue and uses every trick available to prevent the truth from coming out. How can you respect a person like that?

Even if millions of sycophants call a person "honorable," if he or she does not have honor, the title will mean nothing. "Honorable" is a word that has lost meaning in our vocabulary. All congressmen are addressed as "honorable," but are they? Judges and members of investigating committees are addressed as "Your Honor," but what honor do they mean? Ambassadors are called "Excellency" but what's so excellent with many of them?

Well, in the present repressive regime, any time and place and opportunity to air a protest is the right time. Nobody can easily get close to GMA, surrounded as she is with her storm troopers at all times. She won't listen to anything that is not favorable to her anyway. You have to be quick and seize every opportunity to get her attention. Which was what Pangilinan did. She got GMA's attention and ear. And that of the nation, too.

And finally, Pangilinan is the employer of the President, one of the millions of citizens paying her generous salary and other perks, as well as those of her retinue. The President and her assistants are the servants of the people. Therefore, the people, Pangilinan among them, have the right to tell her what they think of her. As employer, they have the right to fire her. And that is what they have been telling her all along-they want her to resign.

Her classmates should understand that. If they dont, then I dont think this country will hava a bright future ahead.

Sakto bai Mosimos.........you can air your protests anytime and anywhere............but you can only have a solemn graduation ceremony once in 4-5 years of hardship in school....................If only that girl thought about that.......she could have not mess that very rare occassion on other people's lives............

la siya delikadesa, nag paka uwaw lang..... Murag kinsang brayta, para nako sayop to iya gibuhat. Kay pwede raman cya mag protesta basta dili lang sa ila graduation....Usa sad, ang iyang gi eskwelahan usa ka State College meaning ang gobyerno nag pa eskwela niya. Pasikat rato iyaha para gamiton sa mga politiko, aron naa dayon kunuhay siya trabaho....tsk,tsk,tsk.........

There's The Rub : Breeding

JO Smith-Medina had a thought-provoking letter last Tuesday in our Letters section. She said that she disagreed with me, she did not think what Theresa Pangilinan did was cause for praise, she thought it was cause for shame.

"I believe that Pangilinan graduated without learning basic good manners and right conduct. It's not wrong to express one's feelings. But there's a place for everything. Panganiban could have said her piece in some other place but not during a graduation ceremony... A person can go through college but end up still uneducated... Attitude is very important. The sum of all these is called breeding. This you cannot get from any school."

Before anything else, I'm glad that Medina, a 17-year-old, has the independence of mind to express her own thoughts on the matter. I'm glad that Medina, a youth who I take it is either a college freshman or is about to become one, has a capacity for introspection and aspiration, two things that are fast disappearing from our midst. There's hope for this country yet.

But I beg to disagree with her position. First off, surely all her criticisms apply more to the guest speaker in the graduation than to the student who heckled her. Let us substitute "Arroyo," for Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, for "Pangilinan" in some parts of Medina's letter and see if that isn't so.

"I believe that Arroyo graduated without learning basic good manners and right conduct." That is at least completely arguable and at most everywhere patent. I made a case for it when Arroyo deigned to lecture the media to be truthful and responsible after she declared a state of national emergency. She is the last person to lecture anyone about truthfulness and responsibility. People who cannot conduct themselves responsibly in elections or tell the truth at any time have no business demanding that others hark to those virtues. If Arroyo should be the guest speaker in a forum on how journalists should do their job, I'd heckle her, too. I don't know what they teach the children these days, but in my time we were taught that it's not good manners and right conduct to lie, cheat and steal.

"Arroyo could have said her piece in some other place but not in a graduation ceremony." Arroyo has no lack of media outlets, Channel 4 being chief of them, a thing that as in Marcos' time we are paying for to lie to us; and mouthpieces in government and in media to give the youth the message that to get ahead in life they need not speak the truth, they need only speak English. Did she have to inflict herself on a graduation ceremony, too? Graduations are blessed occasions, a time for graduates to brim with lofty thoughts and ideals. The guest speakers you get there are living examples you want the youth to emulate. Arroyo is the living example you want the youth to emulate?

I agree: getting through college doesn't naturally make you educated or enlightened, and getting a Ph.D. in Economics doesn't naturally make you civil or well-bred. That is not a counsel best addressed to the heckler, that is a counsel best addressed at the heckled.

But is Pangilinan equally guilty of censurable or reprehensible behavior? There, too, I would disagree. I go back to the story of the emperor and his new clothes. You have a world where people are compelled, under pain of looking foolish, to believe that a naked Emperor is wearing clothes of intricate weave, you need a boy who will shout insolently with voice of innocence, "Why, the emperor is ‘bomba’ [naked]!" to rouse everyone from their delusion.

We've become that world. We are not only learning to accept baseness and shamelessness as necessary, we are learning to accept them as exemplary. We are not just allowing ourselves to be coerced into silence in the face of iniquity, we are allowing ourselves to believe being silent is the only way to "move on." You have Arroyo no longer ashamed of what she did during the last election -- or well before it when she lied to the people about not running ever to spare them never-ending divisiveness -- indeed, you have Arroyo going on to parade herself before the kids as mentor and role model, then the kids have every right to fight back. Then the kids have every right to tell their elders who are being stupid while trying to appear wise: "You blind fools, can't you see the emperor is stark raving naked?"

In normal circumstances, Pangilinan's behavior would have been cause for dismay, but in these extraordinary times, it is cause for elation. There's a time and place for everything? Agreed. But in a time and place where witnesses to wrongdoing are being prevented from witnessing in the Senate, and protesters to that same wrongdoing are being prevented from protesting in the streets; in a time and place where the citizens are being told that they may say their piece only in the time and place -- and manner -- a fake president designates, what else is there but to rebel? What else is there but to see that, in a tyranny, the time and place and way to protest is every time and everywhere and every way?

Breeding is nice. But being polite in the face of injustice is not breeding, it is acquiescing. Being respectful in the face of oppression is not breeding, it is groveling. I will prefer Pangilinan's insolence anytime to that kind of breeding. That insolence shows real breeding, the kind that has to do with discernment and courage, not the kind that has to do with manners and etiquette. The first breeds character, the second breeds only socialites. Breeding in the end is not about learning how to handle the right spoon and the right fork at the right time, it is about learning how to do the right thing at the right time. Breeding isn't shown by social graces in cocktail parties, it is shown by grace under fire.

Still, thank God for Theresa Pangilinan.
