    question!
    is the tank hit by direct or indirect sunlight?
    and for how long.

    some points to consider.
    *It will be a bit hard to provide co2 for a tank this large unless you go with pressurized setups. You can also go with non co2 tanks if you want but your plant selection is very limited. Low light non co2 tanks are low maintenance. so its really up to you.

    *a decent canister filter rated for your tank will go a long way.

    *water circulation is just as important as filters.

    *for substrate, you can go dirt cheap (literally) or you can go designer inspired

    * i think your tank has good natural sunlight exposure by the looks of the potted plants in the pic. The problem is that the light is against your viewing angle; making everything look dark. I think plant growth habits will be affected by light hitting them from behind.

    * For lighting, you have a choice of CFLs, T5s, T5HOs and metal halide for lighting. T5s & CFLs are the norm these days. You can also check out the large CFLs going beyond 40 watts, but theyre rather pricey and need ventilation. Also, get 'daylight'; its cheap, its plentiful and you cant go wrong with it.

    * do your research. Ask around. A lot of acers here have experienced using T5s and they may be able to help. Look out for the number of T5 bulbs over a square foot of tank area and the height of the bulbs from the water surface. That should give you a good starting point.

    * remember that your planted tank woes are directly proportional to the light you provide. too little; plants die. too much; you need to compensate with a LOT of CO2 (otherwise algae happens). The trick is to find a happy medium.

    @lyle, optimus, sir marknicho , I think you three are using T5s. In your tank, how many T5 bulbs are over a square foot of tank area? and how high it is from the water's surface?

    @markykoi, with your CFLs, how many watts of CFL bulbs are spread in a square foot of tank area?

    lets get the ball rollin'

    @soggy: 25 gallon tank.. that'll be 24LX15WX16H (inches)
    i use 2 14 watt T5 Lamps (1.something watt per gallon) ... then from light to water surface, i would say.. an inch ra man cguro ni.. akong gpaduol og maau. ^^
