Edu optimistic he’ll get One Cebu’s help

    Sunday, November 29, 2009

ONE Cebu endorsed Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential aspirant Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. during their convention yesterday, but did not say whether the same support would go to his running mate Edu Manzano.
“It’s up to the local party. Mag-uusap pa kasi ang One Cebu so ginagalang natin ang lokal na partido (The party has yet to wrap up some talks and I respect what the local party will decide). I have to refer you to the local party. That’s my surmise. They still have to decide,” Teodoro said in an interview.
The administration party’s arrangement with One Cebu, he admitted, focuses only on the presidential candidate, for now.
Manzano said he understands “it was unnecessary” for his name to be called during One Cebu’s convention, which focused on “all the local officials who will be running in the local elections.”
But he also remains hopeful he will get the party’s endorsement.
“I hope so. I don’t see why not. I don’t think it needs an arrangement. The fact that she’s (Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia) supporting the candidacy of presidential aspirant Gibo Teodoro, I guess, it goes without saying (that she’ll support me too),” Manzano added.
Party president and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said the party decided to focus on their declaration of a presidential candidate.
“We are focusing on Gibo. We’ll be focusing on our presidential candidate…Let’s not make it anti-climactic. Let’s all focus on the candidate for president,” she told reporters in an ambush interview.
She said the party will choose a vice presidential candidate who embraces the ideals of One Cebu, one “we can be proud of.”
    Allies
“One who stands for excellence, quality, performance. Those are the things that we look for,” the governor said.
In his response to the party’s endorsement, Teodoro said he recognized the need for cooperation between the national and local levels of government.
“I consider it a pride to get the endorsement of One Cebu... It is not only an honor, but a responsibility,” he said.
He praised Cebu Province as a showcase for local autonomy and a “bastion of competence, dedicated and honest leadership,” adding that it has shown “unprecedented growth in industry and tourism, and also as a place for political unity.”
Not all of One Cebu’s allies, however, have agreed to unite behind Teodoro’s candidacy.
Alayon, a local party headed by Rep. Eduardo Gullas of the first district, has chosen to support the candidacy of Sen. Manuel Villar. Bakud, which operates in the fifth district, has not announced who among the presidential aspirants it will support.
    Will
Manzano said he remains optimistic the support for Lakas-Kampi-CMD will snowball before the official campaign period starts next year.
In a press conference, Manzano also said that Teodoro’s recent decision to expel Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan and Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. from the party, following the slaughter of 57 persons in Maguindanao, shows Teodoro has political will.
“Unlike other parties who are still struggling to complete their local slates, Lakas-Kampi-CMD has no problem because we have the majority of the governors, city and municipal mayors who, at the end of the day, will lead the voters for me and Gibo,” Manzano said. (RSA/EOB)
