Whether consoles will end or not, what is most likely to happen is that when the next generation of consoles begins in the next few years, you can bet that the new machines will cost much more - like around $1,000 per console in terms of parts and manufacturing cost.
How can Sony and Microsoft deal with that?

Consoles are becoming like PC. Like the XBox its using its vintage Pentium 4 and 7800 Nvidia graphics.
XBox also has keyboards and mice, Online gaming downloads and now some even has streaming video.
The only difference between a console and PC is the hardware. Enthusiast PCs are way more advanced in terms of graphics, speed and efficiency.
So why not end the consoles and just shift to PC since Consoles are PCs anyway but slower.
