FORMER senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for Cebu City mayor yesterday, despite an earlier request from the Liberal Party (LP) for him not to run.
If he is elected mayor, Sonny said he would return the remaining unsold portions of the South Road Properties (SRP) to the National Government so the City can be relieved of its P700-million annual obligations.
He told reporters yesterday that he would instead use the amount to fund scholarships in private schools and free health services in private hospitals, among other basic services for the people.
Sonny filed his COC as an independent mayoral candidate and without any lineup, but he wants to invite opposition figure Cogon Pardo Barangay Captain Eugenio Gabuya to be his running mate, if he will not run as city councilor under the Kugi Uswang Sugbo (Kusug) party.
With the filing, Mayor Tomas Osmeña will be P10,000 poorer as he lost in his bet that Sonny will not run. But he said yesterday, “Who cares?” He said Sonny is also entitled to his own opinion on the SRP.

Kining mga Osmena nag tuo jud siguro nga Cebu owe them something .. ug dili lang ta pabayad unta ba mga cebuano inig election, ug mobotar lang ta sa angayan nga kandidato, molambo pa jud ta ug samot ... I take my hats off only to serging osmena .. the other osmenas? ambot lang .. wa tay utang kabubut-on ana nila .. vote for the right person to guide us!
