Activision today announced that Modern Warfare 2 has already sold 4.7 million copies in the US and UK, bringing in a cool $310 million within the first 24 hours. The monumental game is also expected to to reach an excess of $1 billion in sales in just a few months according to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian! These launch numbers make the game the biggest launch event in entertainment history, previously held by Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV.

To help rack up the sales figures, over 10,000 retailers began selling Modern Warfare 2 at midnight on Tuesday November 10.

In a statement given to Industry Gamers by Mike Griffith, CEO of Activision Publishing, explains, "The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium." He adds, "The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers. Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment."

I couldn't agree more. Why would Infinity ward do something like this to PC gamers? I was looking forward to buying this online at Steam, but it seems I'll just hold on to getting Left 4 Dead 2 or Dragon Age instead.

I'll just download the cracked version and play it for the single player missions. Screw you INfinity Twerps. You're not getting my money. You had the chance and blew it.

After trying IW.net servers, out of 50 games only 2 of them had delay/lag. So worth the buy for me. Most i have been playing against or teaming up with was US/Europe Players. 3-4 Green Bars most of the time.

One of the best ever multiplayer fps games i ever played.

yeah. I dont see the effects of no dedicated server support - well walay clans og walay cheats og walay pirated online - for now. The only downside I see are the 'perks' system which give significant disadvantage against new players. So for player who start playing online say 2 months from now will surely have difficulty playing remotely at par with players with all the perks and weapon upgrades.

There are already MW2 hacks/cheats being sold online. No game is unhackable.

COD4's lifespan was prolonged because of MODs(PROMOD, Paintball MOD, Zombie MOD, etc) and IW decided to take that away. As to why, I don't know and I don't really give a shit anymore. No dedicated server means you won't can't really form a community.

COD4 has been running for 2 years and until now, it's still very active. I'll be surprised if MW2 will last as long.

I'm not saying MW2 sucks. It's a great game. But paying 60 bucks for a 5 hour campaign(yes, it took me 5 hours) and a "dumbed down" multiplayer is too much.
