Few questions after installing Fedora 6 in external HDD

Hi mga Istorya techies,

Here's a scenario, my laptop (specs: intel core2dou 1.66Hhz proc, 1Gb ram, 80Gb HDD plus I've got an external Fujitso 160Gb HDD) is running in windows XP. Now, knowing that Linux is widely used in industry so I want to explore and learn it myself.

Through the bits & pieces of informations I gathered here in forum, I successfully installed Fedora 6 in my Fujitso extrenal HDD (thanks Istoryans for that). Wa nako hilabti ang built in 80Gb HDD kay running good na ang XP did2. Ang akong gibuhat base sa mga tips diri, akong gipartition ang external HDD nako as follows: 800mb for /boot; 3Gb for swap; 20Gb for Fedora OS ext3 filesystem ako gamit unya ang remaining space ako gi partition as extended mounted in /home (kay nagtoo ko nga ako makita ni sya sa windows para ako magamit).

Anyway, installation went smoothly. I set Windows as my default OS using the command sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.conf. Perfect!

Ako problema karon kay kong tangalon nako ang external HDD, diko ka boot sa Windows XP, mogawas lng sa prompt ang GRUB. Tapos try unta ko mag-install ug applications like VLC kaya lng pag click nako sa Add/Remove program mogawas kay "unable to retrieve software information, this could be cause by not having network connection". So my questions are:

1. Unsaon pag configure para maka boot ko sa Windows XP without connecting the external HDD? Posible ba? kay pag-install nako wala man gyud nako hilabti ang built-in HDD.

2. Ngano di man ko maka add ug application? Any idea?

3. Katong extended partition nako nga around 125Gb mounted in /home, pwede ba nako to sya ma-access sa Windows? Sayang man gud dako pa kaayo ang size, di sya ma recognize sa windows.

4. Unsaon nako pag view sa tanan hardware na available sa laptop? Just like device manager in windows.

5. If ever I decided to uninstall Fedora in my external HDD, kong akong ibalik sa ntfs format para magamit nako sa windows (actually diri nako saved mga movies), unsa ang process?

dili na tingali possible kay ang boot nimo tua man sa externalhdd.
makatype sa grub prompt?

ibutang ang boot sa 80gb nimo. tapos ang tanan nga files ug config na lang ang ibutang sa ext hdd.
tanang hardware tingali --

Your problem is you haven't manage your partition properly.
And I think the fedora installation made your windows os corrupt.
/home and other partitions can be placed in one partition by choosing the custom or expert partitioning so that no automatic configuration will be done in your partitions.
Choose / as your mount point and format as ext3 filesystem.
By choosing /, your /home and other fedora system directories will be placed within the root directory.

you have two hardisk your built-in hardisk known as /dev/sda and your external hardisk /dev/sdb?
Just place your Boot, Windows OS and linux-swap partition inside /dev/sda. And place the fedora OS in /dev/sdb.

Yes you're correct built-in HDD as /dev/sda and external HDD as /dev/sdb. I installed Fedora OS in /dev/sdb as well as the boot & swap partition, diri diay ko namali.

Pangutana nako karon, how could I move the boot & swap files to /dev/sda? Considering nga dili nako makita ang akong built-in HDD in Linux environment.

Ako nlang cguro uninstall ang Fedora, sayang man gud akong 160GB external HDD, I usually use it in saving movie collection, a lot of movies. 20GB man lng allocated for my Fedora OS tapos ang remaining na 140GB di nako ma access in Windows environment. So I think it's better to reformat my laptop then install the 2 OS in built-in HDD, I'll just follow your recommended procedures.


If ever naa ko makita job opportunity in line to your qualification, I would gladly let you know. Based on your posts in forum, one could say that you're highly competent in your field.

Hello,

Try using any of the ff. Boot Disk in managing your Partitions.
This enables you to copy or resize your partitions.
You can search and download the ISO file in the internet.
After downloading, burn to CD. And then Boot using the CD.

1. Hiren's
2. PQ Magic
3. System Rescue CD - I recommended this because it is user friendly.

Complicated issue ni siya. Try kuno backup first imong grub and mbr. After that try to execute fdisk /mbr on windows. Ang sakto unta ana pag-install nimo sa grub imong unta gi-point ang grub sa imong external hard disk. I-set na lang nimo sa imong bios ang boot process na sa usb siya una then sa hard disk.

Have you tried installing on the console by using yum(http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red...ommands.html)?

You just format the external hard disk.
