i was once placed on the spot by our vp in front of my immediate boss who is a senior manager. the vp asked me a leading question whose answer would embarrass the sm. i just answered him, "sir, i'm just here". bleh

rampant jud ang office politics. naa gani rumors sa office about a beautiful rank and file having an affair with her boss para musaka daw. chika nganha, chika ngadto basta pagoryo goryo nalang ko para di maapil...hehehe.

Some companies have less politics than others. No good companies who have low paying employees beware because these companies have the highest politics. most of them promotion would be their #1 goal to get higher pay. Crab menatlity at its best.
The disadvantage of this is that people would tend not to perform their job well they are preoccupied of pleasing their boss instead of focusing on the job or tasks. Oh they do their job but with mediocrity secretly they are preoccupied on planning with gaining favor through other means instead of focusing on the job.
In my experience fortunately the company I worked for is based on performance on the Job and fewer politics. The Higher your performance is the more respect you get. Rather than respect through ass kissing your the boss.
It really would happen that your Boss is a jerk who loves his/her ass being kissed. Who bathes in praise and compliments with his subordinates. a book in leadership states that this is one characteristics of a weak leader.

I use the "talk to the hand" technique. Works like a charm.

"Talk to the hand" (or "tell it to the hand") is an English language slang phrase associated with the 1990s. It originated as a contemptuous way of saying that no one is listening, and is often elongated to a phrase such as "Talk to the hand, because the ear's not listening".

The sentence is often considered to be a sarcastic or obnoxious phrase. The phrase was popularized by actor and comedian Martin Lawrence in his 1992 sitcom Martin. It is usually accompanied by the gesture of extending one arm toward the other person, with the palm of that hand facing the person being insulted, in the manner of the gesture to stop.

believe in yourself, your capacity and skills. Nevermind what others says..continue to grow and bank on learnings coz at the right time..you'll find better things falling in your way..be it in the same company or its competitor. learned by experience.

When people talk about office politics, they always mean the negative things. Office politics is not all bad. Boss to Employee relationship is part of office politics. A sales agent trying to sell a CAR to a prospect client is part of office politics.

You got to play office politics if you want to go up the food chain. Nobody would want you up the management if you don't know how to be a leader. Leaders are good in office politics. Are you working to get paid? To earn money to survive? Pay the bills? Save up for something? Buy a car? DSLR? Leaders get better pay. If you want more pay, you gotta climb up the food chain. But you won't get up there without office politics. That's how it is, at work and in life.

Those at the bottom of the food chain are the first ones to go if the company needs to "optimize" itself to survive the economic depression. This happens a lot even in well established companies.

So don't ignore office politics completely. Learn it, Accept it and if you have the guts, Play it and play it right and you're in the right path. The experience you will gain will greatly help you, in life and in your career.
