Silliman is even way better now.. you need to pay a visit guys

  3. #333
yeah, i plan to. Hopefully soon. Just curious, is the quality of education still excellent? I saw the recent CPA board exam results and noticed that Silliman's passing rate is a bit lower. Though, it's not that bad. but we used to be #1 here.

Hmmm.... Maybe you should hold your horses guys and take this matter from an objective standpoint. Take this report from the 2009 Engineering licensure examinations. It says Silliman is Top 2 in the entire country:

And oh, NORSU's not in the Top3. Not even in the Top 20. So I don't know what the basis of your claim is. Further, an institution's quality of education is not solely based on whether an examinee topped the exams. The best indicator is the passing rate of the school (e.g. out of the 100, 98 passed hence 98%) and not so much on whether they produced a topnotcher. If the school was able to produce 2 topnotchers, but the passing rate of that school is only 30%, it would fare less to a school who gets an 80% passing rate even if that school did not produce a topnotcher at all. This is standard methodology. Hence, the mere fact that NORSU was able to produce topnotchers (in the past -which actually does not always happen) does not by itself alone indicate that it's better than the other schools if its passing rate is far below than the rest. In short, if a person tops the exam, it's because he is good, and the credit goes to him alone and not the school. On the other hand, if a school was able to have 94% passing rate (e.g. 94 passed out of the 100 takers), the credit goes to the school even if no topnotchers were produced in the process. It shows that the school was able to adequately train the students to be able to hurdle the exams.

For more information about Silliman, you can check the university's website. Its also interesting to note that Wikipedia Encyclopedia is now having a more comprehensive report about Silliman. personally I consider the matters mentioned to be credible considering that it can be verified by independent sources.

Correct, but considering that its caliber is equal to that of the other great universities in the country, the tuition is justified. Please note, the other universities charge even higher -and they offer the same quality. Not everything can be free. In order to offer the kind of education its offering right now, Silliman needs to pay the corresponding operational expenses. If you stay in an air-conditioned classroom, the air-conditioning costs money, and the university needs to pay for that. Hence, the tuition. But here's the twist, we should even be happy that despite the quality it offers, Silliman University is trying its best to avoid increasing tuition. It has leased its properties to businessmen and built the portal west building to earn income so that it can maintain the quality of education that we need without having to rely much on tuition. Other schools are not doing that. Please do remember that the university has a lot of employees whose salaries they have to pay.

Fact is, quality education is not cheap. True, education is a right, but so is food. Does that mean that food should also be free? It does not necessarily follow that because something is a right, it has to come free. Even public schools are not free. True, the students don't pay the tuition, but do remember that the government pays for the teachers' salary. And this salaries come from the taxpayers! So in the end, nothing is really free.

Speaking of tuition... How much is the tuition now for a typical 15-unit study load? It's been years since I left "the halls of Silliman."
