FROM CONGRESS TO SENATE, CHIZ HAS DONE NOTHING SIGNIFICANT
After his hypothetical consultation in Mindanao, Senator Chiz Escudero was recently reported to have barnstormed vote-rich Pangasinan, visiting six towns and two cities in the province, apparently as part of his early preparations when he decides to run for President in the May 2010 elections.
Escudero claims when he was a congressman representing the first district of Sorsogon, he visited every village and city in the province. And since he is now a senator, he should now visit “every town and city in the country.”

For a reasonable, forthright thinker, this is a palpable excuse for early campaigning. But whatever his reason, it’s easy to visit every town and city to shake hands with potential voters, not only in Sorsogon but even across the entire Philippines, provided that one has the funds for travel expenses.
But what is harder to accomplish is to show that you’ve done something on top of visiting every nook and cranny in the country.

Let’s not talk about the entire Philippines. Let’s just focus on Sorsogon, Escudero’s home province which he was supposed to have served for nine consecutive years as a three-term member of the House of Representatives.
He claims to have visited every village in Sorsogon, so he must have seen for himself the sorry state of his fellow Bicolano’s in the province’s impoverished neighborhoods.
Has he done something about this? Like we have already stressed countless of times…obviously and apparently not.
***
Escudero has denied accusations that he has done nothing for his home province of Sorsogon. Well, can he show us his accomplishments to support his denials?
The data and records clearly show Sorsogon is wallowing in hunger and poverty. The National Statistical Coordination Board reports that poverty incidence worsened in the province from 43.5% in 2003 to 55.3% in 2006.
But Escudero is now claiming that because he’s from the opposition, he hasn’t been receiving pork barrel funds that he could have used to bankroll pet projects in his home province.
But as we have also stressed before, Department of Budget and Management (DBM) records show that Escudero received P20 million in Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) in 2005 and a total of P68.6 million in lump sum in 2004, plus another P21 million in PDAF funds in the same year.
***
Escudero missed out when he was a congressman. When he became a senator, he has another chance to help his fellow Bicolanos. But, I guess just like before, he would come up with his excuses.
If Escudero can’t even help his fellow Bicolanos in Sorsogon get a better chance at life, how can he accomplish the massive task of unshackling millions of Filipinos from the bondage of generational poverty when he decides to run and ends up President next year?
Kawawa naman ang bayan natin.
