Best Canon DSLR for Weddings?

seriously... the 40D is great for weddings

I even shot weddings with a Sony F717 and also a 300D...


the only problem I had with those cameras was that
the buffer was small. I'd take 3 shots and it locks up
transferring the photos to the card while I miss great pictures

with the 40D already you have a big and fast buffer, fast
frame rate for machine gun shooting during bouquet toss
moments, and good noise handling at high iso

But thanks for your input. Biases aside, would you replace your 40D with a 50D as your main wedding camera? Or do you even already have both?

hmmmmm... I'd rather invest in additional lenses

I currently have a 50 1.8 and a sigma 17-70 (kit lens replacement). a fast long lens would compliment that. my kit lens died when the camera rolled off my bag and landed lens down just a few inches off the floor. don't knock the kit lens. me and other photographers have done and still do commercial work with the belittled kit.

I'm happy with the 40D though the extra 5 megapixels of the 50D would give you more room in cropping. but then again I try to frame things right in my camera first so the extra 5 megapixels is not that necessary. always try to get things right in camera. you don't want to spend several sleepless nights touching up 1,000~2,000 images each wedding. the 40D has three custom user slots while 50D only has two (why? oh why?!!!). what's great about that is I can program one user setting for say iso400|1/40|f6 for flash shooting in the crowd then if something happens like on stage I can quickly switch to the other custom user setting with iso1600|1/125|f6 and continuous shooting to capture the action in available light... the extra custom function would store settings for other scenarios. the only thing I like about the 50D is the AF ability in live view mode (helpful in shooting over your head or ground level).

my 300D finally died so I'm down now to one body. it's always best to have two bodies in case something happens. once on my brother's wedding I had that damn mirror failure happen on my 300D and had to do the rest of the wedding sans AF. another nice thing about having two bodies is I can have the mid zoom on one and the telephoto on the other. I can then switch focal lengths without missing a beat (just get a nice back massage after). so I will invest in another body when I can... though for now I'd go for the 500D... smaller for everyday carry (also less added weight when paired off with the 40D) and then I can shoot video too fear my canons steven spielberg!!!

Thanks bai. As mentioned ni motown, ganahan na unta ko nikon d90 pero si misis ganahan sab musud ani na bisyo and ganahan shag canon. Mag canon nalang sab ko para mag share ra mi sa lenseses.

Hinay ang focusing sa 50mm ky dli man ni USM, diskarte na jud nimo unsaon. But once your familiar with your equipments ma-aware naman ka sa iya weakness so you try to compensate/avoid that situation.

Curious lang ko, why would your wife want a Canon? Nindot bya ng D90, in fact mao ni reason why I'm having thoughts of crossing over hehehehe

Dude, I got ya the first time. Could you please read the quoted message and try to understand what information I'm trying to get. And yes, I've heard about the "wala sa pana, naa sa indian" analogy for the nth time - which I personally think is crap. If the same indian uses a 0.5mm bamboo-body bow vs a crossbow, which bow do you think is more effective?

It's both the indian AND the bow that makes a good archer. In no way is it implied in my post that it's only the camera that DOES ALL THE JOB. I just wanna take advantage at what technology has to offer - and with my research, being the highest model doesn't necessarily equate to having the best tool for a particular scenario (i.e. landscape, night shooting, weddings, etc.... you get the drift). I just wanna hear from actual canon users who are into wedding gigs.

Sheeesh... what does a noob have to do to get decent help around here...

You certainly desire robots that makes you breakfast and flying cars for commuting. That's science fiction! The reasoning goes, if one advance technology (as what you call it) can do the work of a million skilled photographers using obsolete dslr, then surely one advance technology camera (as what you call it) is worth an army of skilled human photographers.

Your skills is valuable to the extent that it helps you achieve your mission. Expand your reach instead of trying to rely on advance technology (as what you call it).

Don't equate bamboo-body bow vs a crossbow since the purpose is to kill then i have other means how to use bamboo-body bow more effectively for killing. Get it?

Bro, I'm sorry that's how you see me. I really did have an honest and legitimate inquiry about canon dslr's.

I will choose to respect your opinion and no longer add more to this thread. I already got the answers that I need to make an educated decision on my future DSLR purchase.

Just wanted to add that I think you're a great photographer. I saw all your samples around the thread, especially on the Macro thread. Good stuff.

Thank you so much for the insights sir. I now see the wisdom in investing in good lenses. The good thing is that the 40D is quite cheap right now so I think I'll go that route.
