EXAMPLE 1:

我不瞭解。

I'm not Chinese, thus I do not understand the above statement. Therefore, it is meaningless to me, and it would be pointless to respond to it.



EXAMPLE 2:

There are people who don't understand particle physics. Therefore, the Large Hadron Collider is meaningless to them, and they think of it as a pointless endeavor (i.e. a waste of money).

Question is, would you enter heaven despite your claim that you don't believe in it? Imagine you are already on the Gate of Heaven, would you still say, "No, I won't enter heaven?"

I know that you can't travel faster than the speed of light, but hey, I still enjoy watching Star Trek.

So yes, if I were at the Gates of Heaven, I'd still enter it faster than you'd bat an eyelash. But only if I were at the Gates of Heaven. In the meantime, I'm still content with what I have.

What if I say my curiosity to decipher such text, calligraphy, code...whatever... makes that thing meaningful? What if after translating the text I would found out that it's about a note that someone would be killed.
What if I say I want to learn about LHC despit me not a scientist at all could make my life meaningful no matter what outcome the LHC has to offer?

Butterfly Effect? Familiar with this? What you are doing now has an effect to other people who may be unknown to you or far away from you. And they may not be interested or they may not care about you and everything you do at all.

Now who is meaningless, you or them? The point here is, we are connected to each other in so many ways. If you find this answer pointless or meaningless, you don't have to reply on this post. If you do, then that means I am VERY meaningful to you, not just because you can understand what is happening here, but more so, you believe that this is affecting both of us and others who later would read this...and even to people who don't read this, and even to people who don't understand this, and even those who don't care about this. Similarly, that Chinese phrase doesn't care if I understood it or not, it will simply continue to exist as is, regardless of whether I understood it or not. Buttmen is correct, if he wishes to act upon it (i.e. learn and understand Chinese), to somehow attempt to effect a change, then that's his choice.

First "standing on what you believe in" is overrated (again, just a reminder, not a universal truth, just my opinion). That's the best path to extinction (lack of the ability to adjust/adapt), being inflexible.

It seems, by your words, that you feel fit to be the judge. At least I'm honest enough to know I'm not one, nor will there be a circumstance wherein I'd see myself fit to be a judge. If you think I'm "evil" because I make decisions on a whim, then, as Lance said "So be it."

YOU are not "evil." The story earlier says that even if you claim as such, "that you are evil," the story says that, you would still be invited to enter heaven. In the story there was no condemnation.

yes i get your point. but we're talking about human lives dwelling on earth. granted that the universe doesn't care, does that mean living as a human being on earth is meaningless or pointless? despite of what you believe in?
