Okay, so you’re finally ready to throw those obnoxious old telephone cables away and switch over to a real geek’s internet: Wireless routers.
So obviously, the question is, which wireless router to get?
If you just want to get started and don’t really care, walk on down to the nearest office supply store and grab the cheapest one they got. Of course, if you want something fast and reliable, the typical route is to read a bunch of user reviews on the web.
Don’t bother. Here are some of the best reviewed routers available.
D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Across the board, the most celebrated=2 0router out there today has to be the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router. In terms of speed and reliability, this router brings it. It’s really so incredibly fast, that most users won’t even be able to use it to its full capabilities. It was designed with bandwith-hogging online gamers in mind, as well as hefty downloading and VoIP, if you’re not actually into downloading entire movies and playing the newest online games, you may actually want to opt for something a bit cheaper.
If you’re a gamer, though, you really can’t ask for a better router than the DIR-655.
TRENDnet TEW-631BRP300Mbps Wireless N-Draft Router
The TEW-631BRP is widely reviewed as a favorite. It’s a bit slower than the D-Link DIR-655, but shares much of the same technology. Where the DIR-655 Xtreme is more of a specific router for gamers and downloaders, the TRENDnet TEW-631BRP300Mbps is more for general purpose and it will more than take care of typical use.
Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster
Based on an older wireless standard called 802.11g, this router isn’t quite as fast as the above listed routers, nor is it quite as impressive in terms of range. It is, however, one of the most reliable routers on the market. It’s compatible with most devices and it works for general purpose quite nicely.
Reviewers have reported20a bit of lag with basic online gaming, but in general, you should do just fine with this router for all but the most demanding internet-based tasks.
The Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router is also the cheapest router on this list. It generally gets high points in user reviews, and it definitely gets the job done.
