how is the case in Kenya different? people in the Inquisition believe so much that people who don't believe in Christ are agents of the devil, and therefore perceive them as a threat to the peace in their society or homes.. its pretty similar as having a neighbor come to your house with an *ulterior motive of robbing* you your chance to go to heaven..

the root cause of that incident in kenya is suspicion in the mind.. that creates all kinds of imaginary evil just like how the Inquisition did..

a person will not retaliate unless he (and part of that is his world-view) is threatened in one way or another, imaginary or not.. and people who dont know how to delineate what's real from the un-real (in the physical sense at least) mistakenly cross this line of retaliation most of the time.
I think the primary objective of the Inquisition was against heresy and can only be done on baptized members of the Church. Heresy was just really an excuse to persecute people not necessarily out of fear but for political objective of the Church and its allied monarchy. All sort of possible excuse are use to justify the persecution alleged enemies to the masses- including witchcraft. I think the 'fear' we are talking about is only in the minds of the Church leaders and their allied nation leaders in the case of the Inquisition; their fear of losing their influence.

Witch burning in Kenya is more than suspicion in the mind, witchcraft for them is real...this is not about fear of losing political influence or power. This is about fear of one's life. Unless we take witchcraft as nothing more than hocus pocus then there's really no justification for burning them but then again we are not in their shoes

    The difference is motive.

I'm not trying to defend the Inquisition, but for partiality of opinion here's one good read:

Boy there sure are some amazing figures being thrown around on this topic by those wanting to witch-hunt the faith of Christianity. In Islamic nations witches are beheaded and they are persecuted in most non Christian countries as well.

The classical period of witchhunts in Europe falls into the Early Modern period or about 1480 to 1700, spanning the upheavals of the Reformation and the Thirty Years' War, resulting in an estimated 40,000 to 100,000 executions.

Although far less frequently than in the past, witch-hunts still occur today, especially in Africa. Witch-hunts against children were reported by the BBC in 1999 in the Congo and in Tanzania, where the government responded to attacks on women accused of being witches for having red eyes. A lawsuit was launched in 2001 in Ghana, where witch-hunts are also common, by a woman accused of being a witch. Witch-hunts in Africa are often led by relatives seeking the property of the accused victim.

What you have is an ancient culture which the steep in old beliefs with a loose and poor conceived Christian beliefs. This is a culture of ignorance and their belief in witchcraft long predates the introduction of Christianity. Christianity did not cause this, rather it was the ignorance of a community which has deep fears of witches and witchcraft. This is an evil act of man and nothing more and to lay the blame on a religion is just as ignorant. This is the act of ignorant evil people trying to drive out ancient fears and superstitions. Read the history of this backward culture, and understand this is an act of stupidity, ignorance, greed, and evil hearts. Put you petty judgments were they actually belong, and understand that these acts of evil will not go unpunished. Their evil acts will be punished by the same God that will judge us all. I hope God blessed those that died, and I believe those that did this evil deed will burn much slower for an eternity. Evil is done by evil men not Christianity, the book teaches love and tolerance, it is evil men how teach hatred.

More than 80% of Kisii today are Christians with a few still practicing traditional religion. Gusii believed in a supreme God called Engoro whom they believed created the universe and was the source of all life. Death was considered "unnatural" and brought by witchcraft. They believed in medicine men and spirits of their ancestors. Today, witchcraft is still feared in Kisii communities.

if you factor that in, then that takes on a different agenda.. keeping one's flock in check and in line.. a contamination in one can spread to others.. if you practice witchcraft, might as well be excommunicated than be burned to death.. (which is also what you have pointed out earlier, suspected practitioners of witchcraft are given warning letters so that they could leave the village)

as for Kenya, fear of the unknown that leads to a suspicion of the known is also similar to the mob reaction of an inquisition.. that mob will not have come to a point of burning their own (similar to one of their flock, without the baptism ritual) without someone leading (an inquisitor) the idea that one of them harbors the unexplained (therefore unknown) yet still imaginary power to cause all the bad things that's been going on. no one is courageous enough to go against a mob, especially when its constituents are in an uproar already.. lest you want to be included in the execution list.

i cannot see why you cannot see the obvious similarities of Kenya to the Inquisition. I'm sure there are other atrocities in the past not related to Christianity that is similar to this one.. its just the inquisition that exemplifies it most remembered in history.

the inquisition is not a nice thing, even the catholic church wants to atone for its sins in the past.
