sorry i forgot the links mentioned:
    http://certifications.wi-fi.org/wbcs...d_products.php

well basically it is illegal because you are connecting a link which is not yours.. however our instinct would tell us to connect because why in hell they leave it open and unsecured in the first place... anyway, that depends on the local ordinance where you are residing... but again as ive said, they have inability to determine your identity becausethey can only see your pc's mac/ip addresss unless they have to get into your house (which is agianst your privacy) and check that you are using that ip/mac address

    How to spot a warchalker/wardriver/etc?

    Or this

And, the most convincing sign that your wifi has been stolen is when you have been chalked...

he he. your first pic seem to be a real serious wardriver. haven't seen somebody used an Andrew 24dBi Magrid antenna for this purpose.

Anyways, what we use is just but a container of Pringles for the antenna.

I don't go around chalking people's houses or yards---I'm already concerned that whenever I power up my laptop, 50% of the time I get connected to my neighbor's unprotected Wi-Fi. One of these days, I'm gonna have to test the range of a toy that I currently have (note the "dots" on the "radaresque" GUI showing the approximate distance of the APs from the iPAQ):

All the more reason to at least activate built-in encryption of APs (note that with a freeware app, I am able to id APs as protected or not):
