    Asean Basketball League

The ASEAN Basketball League will initially be made up of 6 teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei. In coming years, Indonesia and Philippines will be granted two spots each because of the large population and reach of the game in these countries.

Teams will compete in a home and away league format culminating in playoffs for the top 4 teams. The tentative league period is October to February every year.

Well, pag ask ni Bill Belasco last time ni Commish Barrios, na dili ba daw threat sa PBA ang ABL, sulti ra siya murag dili daw since ang PBA is centered sa Philippines, while ang ABL around SEA... niya ingon sad siya na unta masuccessful ang ABL kay LISOD daw KAAYO ang system... pasabot niya ang TRAVEL2x sa teams from the different participating countries which mr. Barrios mentioned na DAKU DAW JUD KAAYO GASTO(specially international pa ilang travel), as what iya na experience sa out of town games sa PBA(inter-island travel lang)...

Patriots leave for Jakarta ABL Tourney
    source: mb.com.ph

The Philippine Patriots go to the territory of their long-time rival this Friday as they try to enhance the country’s lofty status in the region in the 1st ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Invitational Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

While they are fully prepared and motivated to face the Indons in their 5 p.m. encounter at the Britama Arena, the Patriots will be without head coach Louie Alas due to his commitment to Letran which is now deep in preparation for the forthcoming Final Four war in the NCAA.

Alas will also miss the Patriot’s game against the Singapore Slingers next week in Singapore but that poses little problem for the Patriots.

“My instruction is very clear, they have to play as one big fighting unit because they will be playing against our long-time rival,” said Alas. “The Indons are very strong, they have been playing together for a long time.”

Without Alas, former two-time PBA MVP Bogs Adornado will call the shots for the Patriots – co-owned by Harbour Centre CEO Mikee Romero and TV-5 (formerly ABC-5) top honcho Tony Boy Cojuangco.

Knowing fully well the odds of playing against the Indons right in their home court, Romero said the Patriots must play at the top of their game and with lots of passion to hurdle their first test in this home-and-away tournament.

“So long that you’re playing for your flag and country, it’s imperative that you have to go out and play with pride and passion, and that’s my message to our players. This is another war that we have to win at all cost.”

Former PBA hotshot Rob Wainwright and UAAP star Khazim Mirza lead the cast that are out to prove something for themselves.

RP Patriots face Indonesians in opener
(The Philippine Star) Updated October 10, 2009 12:00 AM

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Philippine Patriots start their title drive against a fancied Indonesia side of Satria Muda Britama today as the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Invitational Championship unfolds with a lone inaugural game at the Britama Arena here.

A highly regarded cage power in the region, the Philippines has been installed as the team to beat in the six-nation tournament through the Patriots, co-owned by Harbour Centre CEO Mikee Romero and TV-5 (formerly ABC-5) top honcho Tony Boy Cojuangco.

Coach Louie Alas, however, said all teams are title contenders with the imports expected to boost each team’s chances in the tournament.

“The presence of imports gives everybody equal chances. Besides, we’re still in the getting-to-know stage, everybody is still feeling his way around,” said Alas.

Former two-time PBA MVP Bogs Adornado, however, will call the shots for the team in the Patriots’ first two games since Alas has to finish his previous commitment with Letran in the NCAA.

Heading into the 5 p.m. match with the hosts, Alas is still trying to work on the team’s chemistry.

“We’re still trying to find the right formula for the team but I’m confident the boys will make the right adjustment during the game,” said Alas.

Former PBA star Rob Wainwright and UAAP hotshot Khazim Mirza of UST head the Patriots’ bid along with imports American Jason Dixon, the 6-foot-10 former PBA import, and ex-NCAA star Brandon Powell.

Other members of the team are former La Salle enforcer Jerrwin Gaco, Froilan Baguion, Christian Coronel, Neil Raneses, Mark Andaya, Ricky Ricafuente, Erwin Sta. Maria, Nat Cruz, Dino Daa, Hafer Mondragon and Warren Ybanes.

“This is quite a competitive team but for us to beat Indonesia, we need total team effort. The locals must step up big time and must not depend on our imports most of the time,” said Romero.

For his part, Cojuangco urged the Patriots to play with pride and passion, saying: “They (Patriots) should not allow themselves to be intimidated or be distracted by anyone.”

Former PBA player Rensy Bajar will suit up for the Indonesian team which will be backstopped by imports Alex Hartman and Theo Little.

Basketball: Singapore Slingers beat Brunei Barracudas in opening ABL match
By Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 11 October 2009 2211 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Slingers got off to a winning start in the inaugural ASEAN Basketball League, by defeating Brunei's Barracudas 87-69 to win the team's first match.

Despite only a thousand fans showing up at the Indoor Stadium to cheer on the home team, the Slingers were in control of play, leading the first quarter 20-13.

Brunei, however, narrowed the gap in the second quarter, but the Slingers domination continued and they finally secured victory.

Fitness was a slight problem as the team has only been together for five weeks, instead of the eight weeks normally required for a pre-season programme.

"So at this point in time, probably for the rest of the month, we would be doing extra things to bring us up to where we believe will get us through the whole season at a high level," said Frank Arsego, Head Coach, Singapore Slingers.

Organisers are however confident that spectator numbers would be up for the next match between Singapore and the Philippines. And with the Filipino team also winning their first match on Saturday against Indonesia, a cracker of a match is expected between the Patriots and Slingers next Sunday.
