Mavs Satisfy Need for Speed, Race Past Spurs
SAN ANTONIO, May 9 (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks changed their starting lineup, changed the tempo and changed the complexion of the Western Conference semifinals.
With Devin Harris satisfying a need for speed, the Mavericks raced to a 113-91 victory over the San Antonio Spurs that evened the series at one game each.
Josh Howard had 27 points and nine rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki added 21 and nine for the fourth-seeded Mavericks, who needed slightly more than three quarters to surpass their Game 1 total as they unnerved the defending champions.
After giving in to the patient pace of the top-seeded Spurs in Sunday's 87-85 loss in the opener, Mavericks coach Avery Johnson inserted the speedy guard Harris in the lineup, replacing swingman Adrian Griffin.
The move was a masterstroke as Harris helped contain Tony Parker and accelerated the offense to a new gear the Spurs could not match. Harris scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, most of them after getting inside the defense.
"We thought we played a game pretty much our style," Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said. "The pace of the game was a lot better than the pace in Game One. A lot of that had to do with Devin being out there."
"I found out at practice (Monday) that I would start," Harris said. "We talked about the possibility of using me more in this series. Avery told me that I would get into a rhythm after that first series and that I would play more minutes as I get more comfortable out there in this one. I was trying to get more transition buckets tonight and get the game to our pace."
