well if its illegal then they only see the MAC and IP address of the computer and they can never pin point the user who has accessed their AP unless they have to come to your house and check your PC/Notebook which is against privacy i believe...

regarding the signal, your pc/notebook will always associate to your access point with security being configured unless your neighbor has the same SSID and Security (which is next to impossible). well if you intend to connect to their AP which is open and has no security enabled, you can at any time do it too

well the way i see it in my ntoebook which ive taken a deeper interest in wi-fi, even though secure, it connects to whatever signal is stronger secured on unsecured, and it automatically connects to that.
for eg. in the living room where the ap is located near the stairs it sees mine and two others, home and 3 others but it connects to mine, im my room it sees linksys as stronger and goes there and in my parents room its textro, i think il let go of our dsl connection next month, with all these unsecured wifi.. and i dont want to find who these neighbors are, i think its kindof insulting to come over and say hey, ive been using your wifi for free i think you go better secure it

Very good points. A friend called me one night, needing help with a weak WiFi signal on his daughter's notebook. When I came in, he and his daughter were in the same spot in their house, working on their respective computers. I did not bother to ask where his AP was (obivously, he didn't have one; guess where he got his broadband access?). It was really funny in a sick kind of way: we'd move the laptop on the other side of the room and we'd drop the connection, move a few paces towards the other direction, and we'd pick it up. Of course the nieghbor's wifi signal strength wasn't the only problem the daughter's laptop was facing, it had some funky virus in it, courtesy of an antivirus program that hasn't been updated in the last year.

During an out of town meeting, a colleague of mine, unaware that there was no wifi in the hotel rooms we were staying in, was trying to connect to my laptop which was apparently able to broadcast its SSID.

lokster: I'd keep your DSL account for now. One of these days, our lawmakers are going to get tech savvy, and our broadband providers and wireless device manufacturers are gonna find ways to get more money out us consumers. One of these days, somebody will get a lawyer to file a case claiming illness from all those wifi signals intruding into one's private space.

good point yeah one of these days our lawmakers will make laws for the technological stuff in philippine life. but so far, many are ignorant and fewer are as knowlegdeable as us about these things. im glad im in a forum of smart guys who i can learn from.

lolz imagine that moving around a room trying to get a signal, almost wishing that wi-fi could broadcast like GSM. ahahhaha

different routers have different setup procedure but same protection. Ang mas maayo follow the manufacturer manual or use maufacturer website, para sure jud nga way maka share sa imong line without your knowledge.

im using WPA2 then AES... is this reliable enough?
